In the

Welcome to the September 2013 issue of C&RL 
News. I hope that all of our readers had a good 
summer break and are returning to work re-
charged for the new academic year. This issue 
starts out with a look at RE:BOOK, a National Li-
brary Week contest at the Claremont Colleges Li-
brary that encourages the reuse of cast-off books  
and other paper to create art. Natalie Tagge and 
Char Booth discuss both the nuts and bolts of the 
contest, and the larger implications of repurpos-
ing and recycling discarded books, in their article 
“Constructive destruction.”

Over the past month, there have been several 
articles, and a good deal of online discussion, on 
social media usage trends among precollege-age 
students. Danielle Salomon outlines the addition 
of the increasingly popular social media app 
Instagram to the UCLA Powell Library’s outreach 
program in her article “Moving on from Facebook.” 
Also in the world of mobile apps, Amanda Watson 
provides a list of “Mobile applications for literary 
study” in this issue’s Internet Resources column.

At the University of Rochester River Campus 
Libraries, librarians collaborated with writing in-

structors to highlight student writing in the library. 
Kristen Totleben writes about the program in her 
article “Medical narratives display and reception.” In 
this month’s The Way I See It Essay, Mitch Fontenot 
writes about his “Five “typical’ years as an outreach 
librarian,” and provides tips for getting the library 
noticed on campus. 

Abigail Goben and Dorothea Salo examine 
the history of data policies for federally funded 
research, outline upcoming changes, and discuss 
what open data means for academic and research 
libraries in this month’s Scholarly Communication 
column.  

Make sure to check out the other features 
and departments in this issue, including a discus-
sion of using library employes to code LibQUAL 
comments by Allyson Washburn and reports 
on ACRL-sponsored programs at the 2013 ALA 
Annual Conference in Chicago, including Board 
of Directors’ actions. This issue also includes 
the call for nominations for our 2014 awards 
program.
