In her 38 years at UT, Smith has overseen many changes to library spaces and technology. At the Chan- cellor’s Honors Banquet, Chancellor Jimmy G. Cheek credited Smith with ensuring that library services have kept pace with students’ ever-changing needs. Tony Stankus, life sciences subject specialist at the Mullins Library, has become the first librarian to have been promoted to the rank of distinguished professor at the University of Arkansas. Appointments Mario Ascencio has been named the col- lege librarian and managing director of the library at the Art Center College of Design. Previously, Ascencio was library director at the Corcoran Gal- lery of Art/Corcoran College of Art + De- sign in Washington, D.C. As cochair of the Corcoran’s Self-Study Steering Committee, Ascencio was key in preparing the institu- tion for its upcoming reaccreditation by the Middle States Commission on Higher Educa- tion and the National Association of Schools of Art and Design. In 2008, Library Journal named him a Mover & Shaker in recognition of his commitment to improving and pro- moting library services at the national and international level. In 2006, he was elected president of REFORMA, the National Asso- ciation to Promote Library and Information Services to Latinos and the Spanish-Speaking. In this role, he led the organization’s 40 board José L. Aranda, assistant professor of li- brary science at New Mexico State Univer- sity-Doña Ana, has earned tenure, effective August 18, 2014. Rich Gause, government documents librar- ian for the University of Central Florida Li- braries since April 1998, has been named a member of the Depository Library Council (DLC). His three-year term on this prestigious committee began June 1, 2014. Established in 1972, the DLC is an advisory committee to the Public Printer and the Superintendent of Documents. Prior to joining UCF, Gause was a public librarian for 12 years in the Or- ange County Florida Library System. He has created or gathered the over 200 research guides on documents for the UCF Libraries (http://guides.ucf.edu/govt?hs=a). Hal Mendelsohn, reference librarian and patents and trademarks librarian at the John C. Hitt Library at the University of Cen- tral Florida (UCF), was honored with the 2014 Excellence in Librarianship Award. Mendelsohn joined the University Librar- ies faculty in April 2001 as reference and library instruction librarian with collection development duties. Prior to joining UCF, Mendelsohn was a librarian at the Arnold LeDoux Library at Louisiana State Universi- ty-Eunice. In October 2012, the Southeast- ern Library Association (SELA) created the new “Hal Mendelsohn Award” in his honor recognizing continual, dedicated, and out- standing service to SELA. He has also held positions at the Los An- geles County Museum of Art, the UCLA Arts Library, the Getty Research Institute Research Library, and the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Watson Library in New York. Diane Bruxvoort has been named university librarian for libraries, special collections, and museums at the University of Aberdeen in Aberdeen, Scotland. Adriene Lim has been appointed the Philip H. Knight dean of libraries at the University of Oregon Libraries in Eugene, Oregon. She served as dean of libraries at Oakland University in Michi- gan since 2011. Prior to that, she was at Portland State Univer- sity as interim univer- sity librarian, associate university librarian, and head of library technologies. Lim is the author of a 2010 pa- per on readability that was published in the Journal of Academic Librarianship that was named among the “Top 20 Articles in 2010” by ALA’s Library Instruction Round Table. Jenny Brice is Dartmouth College Li- brary’s first digital preservation librarian. Knight dean of libraries at University of Oregon (UO), has retired. Carver began her career at UO as as- sistant university librar- ian for public services in 1990, and became dean of libraries in 2002. Her leadership also extended to ser- vice within the Oregon Library Association, for which she was awarded Librarian of the Year in 1999 and the Distinguished Service Award in 2014. Vicki Croft, head of Washington State Uni- versity’s Animal Health Library, has retired. Gail Z. Eckwright, librarian and professor at the University of Idaho, has retired after 37 years. She served as research librarian and liaison to the College of Engineering. Eckwright also retires as University of Idaho’s faculty secretary, where she was responsible for overseeing and supporting shared gover- nance at the university. Jay Lambrecht, associate university librarian at the University of Illinois-Chicago (UIC), has retired. Lambrecht first joined the UIC library as catalog librarian in 1986. In 1998, he became coordinator of technical services, and, in 2002, he took on the role of associate university li- brarian and associate dean. In his career at UIC, Lambrecht helped lead the library’s implementa- Deborah A. Carver C&RL News July/August 2014 410 tion of two library management systems elimi- nating many manual workflows in the process; oversaw the reorganization and merger of many units; implemented the liaison program creating the new Research Services and Resources Depart- ment; and led major facilities projects that have transformed the aesthetics and use of the Daley Library. During his tenure at UIC, Lambrecht was also very active in library, faculty, and campus committees. He was promoted and granted tenure in 1992 and has served on the library’s P&T Committee, Appointments Committee, and Executive Committee. Lambrecht has been an engaged professional participating actively in the Association of Library Collections and Technical Services (ALCTS), serving on numerous com- mittees within the Cataloging and Classification Section. He also served a term as a member of the Library Resources & Technical Services edito- rial board, the premier peer-reviewed journal of ALCTS. He published several articles and chap- ters and a monograph in 1992 on minimal level cataloging standards. Lambrecht was a fellow in the Harvard Leadership Institute for Academic Librarians in 2006 and a fellow in the Research Libraries Leadership Program sponsored by the Association of Research Libraries (2011–12). Victoria A. Montavon has retired after 12 years as dean and university librarian of the University of Cincinnati Libraries. Prior to her appointment at University of Cincinnati, Mon- tavon was university librarian at Wright State University and St. Joseph’s University. Earlier she held administrative library posts at Rider University, Temple University, Lindenwood College, Carlow College, and Notre Dame Col- lege of Ohio. Montavon was a leader in library consortia throughout her career, most recently at OhioLINK. She also served on the ACRL Board of Directors (1994-98). Penelope Myers has retired from Temple University Libraries after 30 years, the last 27 of which she spent as the head of access services at Paley Library. Myers began her career in librari- anship at the Rochester Institute of Technology as a part-time reference librarian in the Zahn Library, which has since closed. Later that year, she moved to the circulation department, and within three years was department head to all of access services. Gary B. Thompson is retiring after 44 years as an academic librarian serving Ohio Northern University, Hobart and William Smith Colleges, at Cleveland State University, and most recently Siena College. At the state level he was heavily in- volved on boards and committees for OhioLINK, NYLINK, NYSHEI, and ConnectNY. For ACRL, his committee work included C&RL News, Choice, and ACRL New Publications. He wrote reviews and articles for Choice, Magazines for Libraries, and Books for College Libraries. He contributed papers, presentations, and poster sessions on information literacy and reference services to national and international conferences, books, and journals. Deaths Robert H. Patterson, 77, former library administrator, has died. Patterson worked at Tulane University from 1965 to 1970 and from 1973 to 1976. He also served as head of spe- cial collections cataloging at the Humanities Research Center (now Harry Ransom Center) at the University of Texas-Austin (1970-73). He was director of the University of Wyoming Library (1976–81), and dean of libraries at the University of Tulsa (1981–98). Patterson was hailed by colleagues as a pioneer and leader in the library preservation movement, and was the founding editor and publisher of Conservation Administration News (1979–94). He held leadership roles on numerous re- gional and national library committees and boards, including the AMIGOS Bibliographic Council, ACRL’s Rare Books and Manuscripts Section Ad Hoc Ethics Committee, and Society for Scholarly Publishing. He was a found- ing member of the Oklahoma Research & Community Libraries consortium, president of the Oklahoma chapter of ACRL, and the Oklahoma State Regents for Higher Education Library Advisory Committees.
