Matt Marsteller, senior librarian at the Carn- egie Mellon University Libraries, has been selected for a three-year position on the Governing Council of SCOAP3 (Sponsoring Consortium for Open Access Publishing in Particle Physics, http://scoap3.org/). A p p o i n t m e n t s Stephanie Hardy has been named director of library services at Southern Virginia University. Elizabeth A. M. Howard has been appointed interim library director of the West Library at Texas Wesleyan University in Fort Worth, Texas. Howard was the digital repository and collections librarian before her current ap- pointment. She has been with Wesleyan for five years. Christopher Richardson has been ap- pointed library director and director of the Office of Institutional Effectiveness at Union Presbyterian Seminary. Ann D. Thornton has been named university librarian and vice provost at Columbia Univer- sity Libraries. Thornton comes to Columbia after almost two decades at the New York Public Libraries, where she was the Andrew W. Mellon director. Thornton has held a series of senior leadership positions at the New York Public Libraries, spanning the sciences, busi- ness, the humanities, and social sciences. She has been responsible for collecting, preserving, and presenting the institution’s vast collec- tions. She has also helped lead in the areas of electronic resources, reference and research P e o p l e i n t h e N e w sAnn-Christe Galloway services, and public training. Before coming to New York, she was a systems librarian with the University of Houston Libraries. Melanie Allen is now health sciences librarian at the University of Tennessee- Knoxville Libraries. Christina Harlow has joined the Uni- versity of Tennessee-Knoxville Libraries as cataloging and metadata librarian. Nicholas Homenda has accepted the digital initiatives librarian position in Digital Collections Services with the Indiana Univer- sity-Bloomington Libraries. Charlotte Myers has been appointed electronic resources librarian at Duquesne University. Rachel Radom has been appointed schol- arly communication librarian at the University of Tennessee-Knoxville Libraries. Caroline Redmond is now assistant librar- ian in the Pendergrass Library at the University of Tennessee-Knoxville Libraries. Mark C. Scott has been appointed so- cial sciences and scholarly communications librarian at Lehigh University in Bethlehem, Pennslyvania. Retirements Karen Lawson, associate dean for collections and technical services at the Iowa State Uni- versity Library since 2006, has retired. Lawson joined Iowa State in 1978. She previously held positions at the State University of New York- Buffalo (1976–78). Lawson served on various ALA committees and chaired the association’s Poster Sessions Committee for many years. Cindy Potter, library director since 1994, has retired from Texas Wesleyan University. She started as a reference and instruction librar- ian in 1988. Potter also taught as an adjunct professor in Children’s Literature and General C&RL News July/August 2015 406 Study Skills. She has been an active member of Texas Library Association, ALA, AMIGOS Bibliographic Council, ACRL and Texas In- dependent College and University Libraries, to name a few. Potter has served as mentor to new library directors, was instrumental in developing a National Recruitment Brochure for the library profession, as well as being involved with the development of consortia resources in Texas. Comfortable seating, a free coffee bar, and open access computers scat- tered on various fl oors were just a few of the changes she implemented during her tenure. Bob Pringle, nursing and pharmacy librarian and director of Washington State University’s (WSU) Spokane Academic Library, has retired after 35 years at WSU. Pringle became head librarian at the former WSU Intercollegiate Center for Nursing Education in Spokane in 1980. Other peers collaborated with Pringle to promote health sciences librarianship in professional organizations, both nationally with the Medical Library Association and re- gionally through the Inland Northwest Council of Libraries and Inland Northwest Health Sci- ences Libraries. He and fellow WSU retiree Vicki Croft joined the Inland Northwest Health Sciences Libraries (INWHSL) as founding members in 1988. Pringle quickly assumed leadership roles as continuing education com- mittee chair and treasurer, both of which he holds today. He submitted grant applications and publicized the group’s continuing educa- tion classes, and helped develop a directory of INWHSL libraries, services, and eligible us- ers, whether hospital personnel or the public. Laurie Sabol, social sciences research and instruction librarian/library instruction coor- dinator, is retiring from the Tisch Library at Tufts University after a nearly 35-year library career. In 1980 she began her career at the Newberry Library as a page. After receiving her MLS, she spent three years at the Chicago Public Library Information Center. She spent ten years at the Jerome Library at Bowl- ing Green State University as a reference/ collections librarian, then as the instruction coordinator. Her tenure there was pleasantly interrupted by a year in China on an exchange program, teaching English at the Xi’an Foreign Languages Institute and spending time in the school’s library. She’s been at the Tisch Library at Tufts University since 1995. At Tisch, Sabol has served as the library instruction coordi- nator and liaison to the departments of child study and human development, education, occupational therapy, and psychology. She has taught innumerable library patrons the ins and outs of library research and still loves the thrill of seeing a student “get it.” Among the projects she’s proudest of, she counts the genesis of the Tisch Sustainability Team, the Undergraduate Research Award, the credit- bearing EXP 19 (Research for Success: Using the Library for Thesis and Capstone Projects), Social Sciences Librarians Boot Camp, and bringing animals into Tisch for de-stressing. Annually, she coordinates numerous events, including the Savvy Researcher Workshop series and orientations for new faculty and graduate and teaching assistants. Deaths Gabrielle Arno, retired Princeton University librarian, died October 15, 2014. Arno retired in 2001 after 17 years of service. Hikyung Yoon Lee, retired Princeton Univer- sity librarian, died March 17, 2015. Lee worked as a librarian at Princeton University for more than 30 years before retiring in 1997.
