Dawes has been named vice provost for libraries and museums and May Morris university librarian at the Uni- versity of Delaware. In this role, Dawes will oversee the staff and operations at the University of Delaware Library; the University Museums, comprising three galleries; and the University of Delaware Press. Prior to arriving at the University of Delaware, Dawes was an associate university librarian at Washington University-St. Louis, where he was respon- sible for many of the libraries’ public services operations. He is a past president of ACRL. Jennifer L. Dean has been named dean of university libraries and instructional technology at the University of Detroit Mercy in Detroit, Michigan. Dean previously served as library director at Siena Heights University in Adrian, Michigan. Her experience in libraries and ad- ministration spans more than 20 years, including positions at Saginaw Valley State University, Central Michigan University, and Northwestern University. Her teaching experience includes graduate instruction in research methods using a blended online/face-to-face format. Jodi Berkowitz is technical services archivist at the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill. Amanda Henley is head of digital research services at the University of North Carolina- Chapel Hill. David Scherer has been named scholarly communications and research curation con- sultant at Carnegie Mellon University Libraries. Ryan Splenda is now business and eco- nomics librarian at Carnegie Mellon University. Ana Van Gulick has joined Carnegie Mellon University as psychology librarian and liaison to BrainHub Ole Villadsen has been newly appointed as liaison librarian for CyLab and the Institute for Networked Information at Carnegie Mellon University. Retirements Margaret E. Auer has retired as dean of uni- versity libraries and instructional technology at the University of Detroit Mercy in Detroit, Michigan. Her career at the university began in 1961. She was dean for over 34 years. Auer has been active in national, regional, and state library organizations and consortia, including leadership of Detroit Academic Library Net- work, the Association of Jesuit Colleges and Universities, and the Midwest Consortium for Library services. Ewa Barczyk, associate provost and director of libraries at the University of Wisconsin- Milwaukee (UWM), has retired after 31 years. Named interim director in 2003 and director three years later, Bar- czyk oversaw a major remodeling project, the Daniel M. Soref Learn- ing Commons. Charles Forrest has retired from Emory Uni- versity after more than 27 years of service. Forrest began his tenure at Emory in 1988 as the director of instructional support services in the Candler Library, after leaving the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, where he worked as assis- tant undergraduate librarian and media coordi- nator for fi ve years. In 1992, Forrest became the director for planning and budget for the Woodruff Library until 2001 when he became the director of library facilities planning and construction. In 2005, Forrest became the library planning offi cer and director of library planning and as- sessment until he moved into his current position as director of library facilities in 2008. Forrest’s service and professional development includes national and state association appointments with ACRL, Library Leadership and Management As- sociation, Georgia Library Association, and the International Federation of Library Associations and Institutions. He has contributed his construc- tion and planning expertise as a library juror for the American Institute of Architects/ALA Library Buildings Awards, ALA International Interior Design Association Biennial Library Building Awards, and Library Journal’s “New Landmark Libraries (Academic)” series. Robert A. Seal has retired from Loyola Uni- versity Chicago after nearly 11 years’ service as dean of university libraries. Seal previously was dean of the library at Texas Christian University, university librarian at the University of Texas-El Paso, and director of library public services at the University of Oklahoma. He also held several positions at the University of Virginia early in his career. He was named ACRL Academic/Research Librarian of the Year for 2015. John R. West, college librarian and director of the George T. and Gladys H. Abell Library Center of Austin College in Sherman, Texas, has retired. West joined the staff in 1984 as the serials and interlibrary lending librarian and over the course of his 32 years there, was involved in every aspect of the library’s operations. As systems administrator, West installed a CD-ROM network in 1990 and in 1995, transitioned Abell from a shared NOTIS system with three other Grayson County libraries to its own SIRSI integrated library system. In 2005, after a national search, West was selected as the fourth director of Abell. West was the website creator and editor for ACRL’s College Libraries Section (1997– 2002). Prior to Austin College, West worked from 1982 to 1984 at the Hillman Library and at the School of Library and Information Sci- ence Library, both of the University of Pitts- burgh. From 1978 to 1982, West worked in the Science Library of the University of Georgia. Barbara Wurtzel, dean of library services at Springfi eld Technical Community College (STCC), has retired. She started at STCC as reference librarian in 1980, and became the coordinator for reference and instruction in 2002. She has been the library’s liaison to the college’s nursing department, and developed a boot camp for incoming nursing students. She served on the Program Committee of MCCLPHEI, the organization of chief librar- ians of public higher education libraries in Massachusetts; headed the interlibrary loan committee of C/W MARS; was chair of the Cooperating Libraries of Greater Springfi eld group in Springfi eld, Massachusetts; served as president of the Pioneer Valley Associa- tion of Academic Librarians; and currently reviews for Catholic Library Journal. Prior to her arrival at Springfi eld Technical Commu- nity College, she worked at the University of Maryland-College Park, and at the American Museum of Natural History.
