C a m p b e l l ' s Annates h a s l o n g b e e n a clas- sic a m o n g the n a t i o n a l b i b l i o g r a p h i e s of i n c u n a b u l a , b u t it h a s b e e n u r g e n t l y in n e e d of revision f o r m o r e t h a n a g e n e r a - tion. Miss K r o n e n b e r g , w h o has d e v o t e d a r e m a r k a b l y f r u i t f u l career to the study of the p o s t - i n c u n a b u l a p e r i o d in the L o w C o u n t r i e s , h a s n o w t u r n e d h e r a t t e n t i o n to fifteenth c e n t u r y p r i n t e r s ; b u t u n f o r t u n a t e l y she b e g s off f r o m the r e s p o n s i b i l i t y of a full-blown revision of C a m p b e l l b e c a u s e of age. T h i s glossary of news- p a p e r t e r m i n o l o g y is a g u i d e to a p r o f e s s i o n - al j a r g o n likely to occur in a n y o n e ' s d a i l y r e a d i n g , p a r t i c u l a r l y in the field of l i b r a r i e s a n d b o o k s . S o m e of the terms can b e totally m y s t i f y i n g , e.g., Leiche ( G e r m a n , o m i s s i o n of w o r d o r w o r d s ) ; chien ( F r e n c h , filler); o r passer au caviar ( F r e n c h , b l o t t i n g o u t p a r t of the text by ink). T r a n s l a t o r s , editors, a n d p u b l i s h e r s will find that this is a n i n v a l u a b l e work. Bockwitz, g u i d i n g s p i r i t of the D e u t s c h e s Buch- u n d S c h r i f m u s e u m in L e i p z i g , d i e d o n D e c e m b e r 2, 1954, o n l y a few m o n t h s a f t e r his b e l o v e d m u s e u m o p e n e d its d o o r s a f t e r r e c o v e r i n g f r o m the war. B o c k w i t z h a d a host of f r i e n d s in all E u r o p e . A c o l l e c t i o n of his essays, Beitrage zur Kulturgeschichte des Buches ( L e i p z i g , V E B O t t o H a r r a s s o w i t z , 1956), h a s been p u b l i s h e d as a fitting m e m o r i a l to h i m . It c o n t a i n s eleven essays p u b l i s h e d b e t w e e n 1938 a n d 1955, all r e p l e t e with B o c k w i t z ' q u i e t b u t i n f e c t i o u s e n t h u s i a s m f o r the b o o k as the p r i m e i n s t r u m e n t of western c u l t u r e . P a p e r , p r i n t i n g , a n d t y p o g r a p h y a r e the s u b j e c t s of the essays, b u t they a l s o reveal m u c h i n s i g h t i n t o the c u l t u r a l history of the p e r i o d s with which they a r e c o n c e r n e d . T h e final essay, o n "Schrift-, Buch- u n d P a p i e r m u s e e n E u r o p a s , " d e s c r i b e s the mu- s e u m s of the b o o k that a r e to b e f o u n d in m a n y g r e a t E u r o p e a n l i b r a r y centers, f r o m M o s c o w to A n t w e r p . W i t h the e x c e p t i o n of the D a r d H u n t e r P a p e r M u s e u m in A p p l e - ton, Wis., a n d a few l i b r a r i e s a n d historical societies which own c o m m o n presses, there is a l m o s t n o t h i n g of this sort in N o r t h Ameri- ca. W e w o u l d d o well to study B o c k w i t z ' es- say c a r e f u l l y a n d c o n s i d e r the f e a s i b i l i t y of a m a j o r m u s e u m of the b o o k in this country. B o c k w i t z ' essays o n research in the history of p a p e r a r e a l s o suggestive f o r us. W i t h D a r d H u n t e r we h a d p e r h a p s the world's m o s t o u t s t a n d i n g s t u d e n t of p a p e r history. U n f o r t u n a t e l y , the i n s p i r a t i o n f r o m the M o u n t a i n H o u s e in C h i l l i c o t h e h a s n o t yet fired the i m a g i n a t i o n of y o u n g scholars. T h e r e is a l r e a d y a new g e n e r a t i o n of p a p e r h i s t o r i a n s in G e r m a n y , b u t n o t in o u r own country. B o c k w i t z ' b o o k is d e l i g h t f u l , in- f o r m a t i v e r e a d i n g , b u t it s h o u l d a l s o serve as a text for the q u i d a n c e of s o m e of o u r own i n c i p i e n t scholars in the field of the history of the b o o k . T h e r e a r e thirty-one m a j o r classi- fications, a n d u n d e r these a r e clear-cut, concise d e f i n i t i o n s of the t y p e of m a t e r i a l to b e classified. T h e r e is a f u l l i n d e x . T h e g r o w i n g q u a n t i t y a n d q u a l i t y of R u s s i a n b i b l i o g r a p h i c a l l i t e r a t u r e l e n d s s p e c i a l im- p o r t a n c e to this work as a r e f e r e n c e b o o k . A t the s a m e time, h o w e v e r , it is well w o r t h study f o r those w h o a r e r e v i s i n g o l d classi- fication systems o r c o n s t r u c t i n g new ones. W i t h o u t c o m m i t t i n g o n e ' s self o n the rel- a t i v e v i r t u e s of socialistic a n d c a p i t a l i s t i c e c o n o m i c s , it is o b v i o u s that the t a l e n t e d p o t e n t i a l b i b l i o g r a p h e r b e y o n d the O d e r is n o t likely to b e s k i m m e d off f o r m o r e l u c r a t i v e fields such as oil field s p e c u l a t i o n , h a n d b o o k m a k i n g , o r m i c r o f a c s i m i l e pro- m o t i o n schemes. I n the S o v i e t U n i o n a n d her satellites the b i b l i o g r a p h e r a n d the geol- ogist, the l i b r a r i a n a n d the p h y s i c i a n a r e on c o m p a r a b l e e c o n o m i c levels ( b o t h low within E u r o p e a n s t a n d a r d s ) . T h e f a c t is, however, that the U S S R a n d h e r a s s o c i a t e d e c o n o m i c s a r e e n c o u r a g i n g b i b l i o g r a p h i c a l s c h o l a r s h i p a n d a c t u a l l y p r o d u c i n g in vol- u m e a n d q u a l i t y that h a s few p a r a l l e l s this side of the O d e r .
