T h i s service will afford current bibliographic control for most of the monographs re- ceived by libraries in the U n i t e d States and Canada, and will provide excellent copy for reproduction of catalog cards. UNIVERSITY OF LONDON l i b r a r y p h o t o - graphic department is now able to provide a new, cheap, rapid service in the copying of materials available in the library. W o r k received by post normally will be completed and dispatched within twenty-four hours of receipt of the request. The National Union Catalog of Manu- script Collections, 1959-61, prepared by the library of Congress and published by J . W . Edwards has been released. N O V E M B E R 1 9 6 2 529 Personnel Few librarians have been more closely identified with the institution they serve than DONALD T . CLARK with B a k e r L i b r a r y of the Harvard Busi- ness School. I n twen- ty-one years as a stu- dent, assistant and a s s o c i a t e l i b r a r i a n , and librarian, D o n C l a r k b e c a m e as c l o s e l y r e l a t e d t o B a k e r L i b r a r y as its classical belfry o r its great pillars. I n his private life, h e was established as a sub- stantial figure in the town government of historic L e x i n g t o n . And, as an avid bird- watcher, he was knowledgeable, indeed, about the birdlife of New E n g l a n d . Yet D o n Clark has broken with his achievements and his position in New Eng- land because his deep streak of Californian- ism was never fully suppressed. I t was evi- dent always in his easy camaraderie, in his penchant—some say—for noisy waistcoats to liven ivy league attire, and certainly in his willingness to break with tradition, to pio- neer, as the Clarks pioneered in building a completely n o n t r a d i t i o n a l house in the now- famous Six M o o n H i l l community. W h e n o n e recalls how instantly D o n Clark has always responded to westerners, western scenes, o r western news, it is not surprising that he is now resident on a C a l i f o r n i a mountain top, b e g i n n i n g a library for the University of California, Santa Cruz, which will open in 1965 as a n o t h e r u n i t of that great university complex. A native of Wash- ington, a two-year student at W i l l a m e t t e College, a graduate of Berkeley a n d a very young circulation assistant in the Berkeley P u b l i c Library—these are the western roots. T h e n , four years in New York, where he pursued librarianship and a young lady named E m i l y Espinshade. H e wound up his 530 New York experience with a degree in li- brarianship from Columbia, with experience in that breeding ground of fine librarians, the economics division of the N Y P L , and with Emily. H e accepted a bid to the Har- vard Business School and welcomed the chance to be a full-time student there for two years before he became, in real, assistant librarian, later associate librarian, and, in 1956, librarian. B a k e r L i b r a r y is far richer in resources and more dynamic in services because of D o n Clark's librarianship. I n his six years as librarian, B a k e r L i b r a r y added fine rarities to its Kress library, the papers of many im- portant businesses and individuals to its manuscripts collection and a constantly widening range of materials to its main col- lection. H e pushed, probed, and experi- mented with the relationship of the library to instructional changes and to the lively intellectual life of the school. A n d always, he sought to make the library more useful to a larger n u m b e r of people. O n e means of do- ing this was publishing. T h u s , B a k e r library now publishes The Executive, a monthly digest which winnows the vast flow of books and journals entering the library for top management, and a monthly list of New Materials in the Area of Transportation. A new edition of A Classification of Business Literature, a bibliography of company his- tories and biographies of businessmen, four new reference lists on economic and business topics, four brochures in the Kress library series of historical studies and a n u m b e r of less substantial works have all come out of B a k e r library since 1956. O n e of his former staff insists that this description omits some quality of Don Clark's librarianship—the ineffable spark in his friendliness and his leadership that have made B a k e r library a happy place in which to work. T h e University of California, Santa Cruz, is fortunate indeed that its appeals have lured D o n Clark w e s t w a r d . — L a u r e n c e J.
