MEMBER OF THE PRINT PUBLISHERS' ASSOCIATION OF AMERICA Cnpvnglit 11)12, Detroit Piibliallilig Co i«Btr«rttflnsi ta BtLUBtnm THIS CATALOGUE is a condensed list of the Art Reproductions "regularly" published by us, with the authority of the Artists or Museums represented. It does not contain subjects not regularly listed. The English Cathedrals, the Missions, America's Scenic Wonders, and other classes of subjects must be found in other catalogues. For school and library decoration refer to the select list of subjects especially chosen for school and library use. "THISTLE" FACSIMILES are copies in full color. Two methods are used, the one chosen being that which gives the best translation of the original. No known single medium gives the best translation of all classes of subjects. The proper function of the repro- ducer, therefore, is to select the medium best adapted for copying the original. The Aac process (exclusively controled by us) preserves the drawing of the original with photographic exactness, and gives a verity and range of color tone not secured by any other method. It is absolutely permanent. The "Waterol" print (produced by a photographic base with oil and water color carefully rubbed in by hand) attains a delicacy and softness of tone specially desirable for some subjects. "THISTLE" CARBONS are genuine photographic carbons. They must not be con- fused with alleged carbons printed by the gelatine or similar processes. They are double transfer prints made directly from full sized plates, carefully equalized for color values. Salesmen should explain to customers the superiority and ©IftBtb 3P«bltratt0«fl greater cost of double transfer carbons as compared with single transfer. Also the great difference in quality between prints derived from small plates and those printed direct without enlargement. Educators who seek truthful qualities will appreciate the proper rendering of balance and tone in these prints. Remodelling and retouching of details have been carefully avoided. The results are such as can not be secured by single transfer nor by plates enlarged from small originals, no matter how carefully retouched. Science has not yet given us any medium for copying paintings in mono- tone which will compare in quality with the well made carbon — besides, it is absolutely permanent. AUTHORITY OF REPRODUCTIONS. "Thistle Publications" have been approved either by the artists themselves or by the museums owning the originals. They have an authority, therefore, which especially fits them for educational purposes. No good school or library will purchase a poor translation from a foreign language, nor an inferior map with details blurred or absent. Even more ob- jectionable is an inadequate translation of a work of art whose authority and quality is open to question. The letters of recommendation at the end of the list are typical of many more in our files which we are privileged to use, if necessary. Our prints are used by eleven of the leading art museums of the country. SIZES. The Roman numeral opposite each number is the class size; the other is the size in inches of the print itself. The first dimension is the upright, and the second the horizontal one. Moderate variations will occur from stretching of the print in mounting and other causes. (FIftalU Publtralinna ENLARGEMENTS to other sizes than those quoted in the catalogues may be made in some cases. All such orders must be subject to the approval of the home office for the following reasons: First, the Aac size can not be varied. Second, in the case of carbons, it necessitates a new special plate, whose cost must be borne by the order. Third, while any subject may be printed in a larger size by resorting to bromide prints, such prints are not authorized by certain artists and museums as good translations of their subjects. PRICES AND SHIPMENTS. Regular retail prices are noted in the catalogue. All goods are sold F. O. B. Detroit and at the risk of the consignee as to transportation. When special packing or boxing is required, a separate charge must be made. COPYRIGHTS AND TRADE MARKS. Prompt action will be taken against infringers of our copy- rights or trademarks. The last copyright act makes certain cases of infringement punishable by fine and imprisonment as well as the usual civil damages. Authority to reproduce any of our prints is granted only through a copyright license issued from the main office. Srtrnit ^ubliatjitig (Ha. These letters are typical of many more we have received which can be produced if necessary. Detroit Publishing Co., Detroit, Mich., U. S. A. Gentlemen: The two subjects you have sent me reproduced from my paintings "Cannon Rock" and "Gulf Stream" are the best reproductions that I have ever seen in my life — a long, long life it has been. Aug. 17th, 1908. (Signed) WINSLOW HOMER. July 23, 1908. Detroit Publishing Co., Detroit, Mich. Gentlemen: Yesterday the reproduction of my Metropolitan picture arrived. I am delighted with the quality of your work. I can truly say that I never saw a more satisfactory tone rendering than you have obtained in this form of reproduction. (Signed) CHARLES H. DAVIS. July 11, 1908. Detroit Publishing Co., Detroit, Mich. Gentlemen: Your reproduction pleases me very much. With the exception of one reproduced by the Brauns of Paris, my work has come out badly, owing, I think, to the fact that the color is too subtle to photograph well. The picture you reproduce has been attempted twice before for periodicals without success. (Signed) H. W. RANGER. 2Ii|tBtU 5P«bltraltn«a 107 January 26, 1908. Detroit Publishing Co., Detroit, Mich. Gentlemen: Your parcel of prints of "Calypso'' reached me yesterday. It is quite the best reproduction of a picture I have ever seen and really very beau- tiful. You seem to have caught the exact tones of the picture and the slight grey quality is rather an improvement than otherwise. In short, I am very, very pleased and make you and all your assistants my best compliments. (Signed) GEORGE HITCHCOCK. April 9, 1908. Detroit Publishing Co., Detroit, Mich. Gentlemen: I have received three copies of the carbon photographs of my picture "A Cosy Corner" and beg to thank you heartily for the same. They are far and away the best reproductions of my work that have ever been made, and I am accordingly very much pleased with them. (Signed) F. D. MILLET. April 12, 1912. Detroit Publishing Co., Detroit, Mich. Gentlemen: I have received both the photograph of Edw. Robinson today, and the one of the Girl Reading and consider them remarkably fine reproduc- tions of the paintings. The one of the Girl, I at first thought should be a little sharper about the face but after going and looking at the picture again I do not see how it could be improved. With many thanks for making so fine reproduction of my pictures, ^ ^'"' (Signed) EDMUND C. TARBELL. 108 2Iljt0tU Publtrattnnfl August 21, 1907. ' Detroit Publishing Co., Detroit, Mich. Gentlemen: I have just seen Mr. Lewis Hind, the eminent English critic, who tells me that your reproduction of the "Mother and Child" is one of the very finest and most perfect reproductions he has ever seen. You know how I feel about it. (Signed) GARI MELCHERS. Salem, Mass., January 18, 1912. Detroit Publishing Co., Detroit, Mich. Gentlemen: I like your color reproduction of my "Portrait of My Daughters" ex- tremely and I think you have made a great success of it - far better than I should have thought possible. (Signed) FRANK W. BENSON. The Art Institute of Chicago September 25, 1912. Detroit Publishing Co., Detroit, Mich. Dear Sirs: The print of Anderson's "Idlers'' is received, and it appears to me to be a very perfect reproduction. .^ Yours very truly, (Signed) WM. M. R. FRENCH, Director. Arkville, Delaware Co., N. Y., October 14, 1912. Detroit Publishing Co., ' Detroit, Mich. Gentlemen : The carbon of ray subject entitled "October" you sent me has just been received from New York. It is a beautiful and remarkable repro- duction of the picture. I am greatly pleased with it, for it could not have been done better. Yours very truly, (Signed) J. FRANCIS MURPHY.
