ARGUMENT 
 
 The story of Tell, the distinguished patriot, and chief instrument of 
 the revolution which delivered the Swiss Cantons from the German yoke in 
 1 207, is so well known as to need little repetition here. Gessler, the governor 
 of these provinces for the Emperor Albert, having ordered him, under pain of 
 death, to shoot at an apple placed on the head of his son, he had the dexterity, 
 though the distance was very considerable, to strike it off without hitting the 
 child. The tyrant, perceiving he had another arrow concealed under his 
 cloak, asked him for what purpose. To which he boldly replied, "To have 
 shot you to the heart, if I had had the misfortune to kill my son!" Ths 
 enraged governor now ordered him to be hanged; but his fellow-citizens, 
 animated by his fortitude and patriotism, flew to arms, attacked and vanquished 
 Gessler, who was shot by Tell, and the association for independency took 
 place on the instant. 
 
 These are the historical facts upon which Schiller in Germany, 
 Sheridan Knowles in England, and other poets, have written plays, and which 
 Rossini has made the theme of one of his most admired operas, each 
 heightening the dramatic interest by the introduction of love scenes and other 
 episodes. 
 
 In the following libretto Gessler is endowed with a beautiful and 
 amiable daughter, Matilda, who has been saved from a watery destiny by 
 Arnold, a Swiss youth, the son of Melchtal, the patriarch of the country, and 
 a determined opponent of the tyrannies of Gessler; As a matter of course, 
 mutual attachment ensues, and leads to the ills which might have been anti- 
 cipated from so ill-assorted a connection. 
 
 At the opening of the piece, we learn that an agent of Gessler's has 
 attempted an outrage on the daughter of a herdsman, and been slain by her 
 father, Leuthold. Obliged to fly the country after this act of vengeance, it 
 becomes necessary to cross the Lake Lucerne, while the weather is so adverse 
 that none of the usual boatmen will row the old man across the tempestuous 
 waters. At length William Tell undertakes the office, fulfils it, and by so 
 doing incurs the mortal hatred of Gessler. As time progresses, the people 
 become more and more disaffected; and the father of Arnold, suspected of 
 inciting them to acts of insubordination, is seized by Gessler, and executed. 
 The son's feelings are thus subjected to a severe conflict between his love for 
 Matilda, his duty to his country, and his desire to avenge his father's death. 
 He, however, renounces his love, and joins the band of patriots now marshaled 
 under William Tell. Events are brought to a climax by Gessler causing a cap 
 to be elevated on a pole, and requiring all passersby to bow to it. Tell firmly 
 refuses to do so, and is thereupon subjected to the ordeal of the apple, as 
 already narrated. Ultimately Gessler falls by the arrow of Tell, and 
 Matilda and Arnold are united.
