[House Bill, No. .] HOUSE OF REPRESENT AVI VES, April 8, 1863.— Read first and second times, and ordered to be laid on the table and printed. [By Mr. Chambliss, from Committee on Naval Affairs.] A. BILL To distribute bounty, granted as a reward to the officers and men serving on board of the Virginia, Patrick Henry, Jamestown, Raleigh, Beaufort and Teaser, for their gallantry and courage in the naval engagement with the enemy's vessels in Hampton Roads, on the 8th and 9th of March, 1862. 1 Section 1 . The Congress of the Confederate States of America do 2 enact, That the sum of one hundred thousand dollars be, and the 3 same is hereby, directed to be paid to the officers and men on board 4 the Virginia, Patrick Henry, Jamestown, Raleigh, Beaufort and 5 Teazer, in testimony of the gratitude of their country for their 6 gallantry in the naval engagement with the enemy in Hampton 7 Roads, on 8th and 9th March, 1862, wherein they sunk the 8 "Cumberland," destroyed the "Congress" and several smaller 9 war vessels, and seriously damaged the Minnesota. 1 Sec. 2. That the above mentioned sum shall be distributed and 2 paid in the following proportions : To the commanding officer of 2 3 the squadron, one twentieth ; to officers commanding separate 4 vessels, two twentieths ; to masters, (including acting masters,) 5 lieutenants, captains of marines and captains of volunteers, one 6 twentieth and half a twentieth ; to lieutenants of marines, sur- 7 geons, assistant surgeons, paymasters, boatswains, gunners, car- S penters, master's mates and pilots, one , twentieth and half a 9 twentieth; to engineers, one twentieth ; to midshipmen, (including 10 acting midshipmen,) captains' clerks, boatswains' mates, gunners' 11 mates, carpenters' mates, stewards, sailmakers, masters-at-arms, 12 armorers, cockswains and coopers, three twentieths ; to yoemen, 13 quartermasters, quarter gunners, sailmakers' mates, corporals of 14 marines and volunteers, and extra petty officers, two twentieths; 15 to seamen, ordinary seamen, marines, volunteers, landsmen, 16 boys and all others doing duty on board, eight twentieths. 1 Sec. 3. Be it further enacted, That if any of the persons, who 2 were on board of either of the vessels above mentioned, were 3 killed in the engagement, or have since died ; the amounts to 4 which they, if living, would be respectively entitled under this 5 bill, shall be paid to the widow of the deceased, if no widow, then 6 to the children, if no children, then to the father, if living, if 7 not to the mother. 1 Sec. 4. Be it further enacted, That the claims under this bill, 2 shall be audited under the directions of the Secretary of the 3 Navy, and paid on his warrant. ,
