 The Legislature of the State of Tennessee 
 having suppressed the distillation of ardent 
 spirits by law, and the Governor of the 
 State of Georgia having issued his procla- 
 mation to accomplish the same result, the 
 consequence has been the alarming increase 
 of distilleries in this State, converting the 
 food necessary to sustain our armies, into 
 poison to demoralize and destroy them — 
 periling the lives of our soldiers and lib- 
 erties of our country. To suppress this 
 great evil it is ordered : 
 
 I. That ' every distillery throughout the 
 State of Alabama, for the distillation of Ar- 
 dent Spirits, be discontinued by the first 
 day of April next. 
 
 II. Colonels of Regiments, Lieutenant-Col- 
 onels and Majors of Battalions, and com- 
 manding officers of Camps, subject to the 
 orders of the Governor and Commander-in- 
 Chief, throughout the State, having good 
 reason to believe that there has been any 
 violation of the preceding clause, or upon 
 the information of any credible person to 
 that effect, will immediately order out all, 
 or such portion of his command as he may 
 deem necessary, and without delay take pos- 
 session of the Still, all the apparatus and 
 liquor, and transport the same to the Court 
 House of the county, where it shall be held 
 subject to the order of the Governor and 
 Commander-in-Chief for munitions of war 
 and Hospital supplies. 
 
 III. No Ardent Spirits shall be sold after 
 
 the first day of April next, within ten miles 
 of any Military Camp in this State, establish- 
 ed by the Confederate or State Authorities, 
 except upon the written prescription of a 
 licensed physician. 
 
 IV^ The officers specified in the 2nd 
 clause, having good reason to believe that 
 there has been any violation of the preced- 
 ing clause or upon the information or oath 
 of any credible person to that effect, will 
 immediately take possession of all the liquor, 
 pack the same and transport it to the near- 
 est Court House, where it shall be held sub- 
 ject to the order of the Governor and Com- 
 mander in Chief. 
 
 V. All good citizens and persons interest- 
 ed in the success of our arms are requested 
 to give notice of the violation of the first 
 and third clauses of this order to some one 
 of the officers specified, and in case of fail- 
 ure, neglect or refusal on the part of such 
 officer to proceed according to this order, 
 at once to report the same to this office. 
 
 VI. All seizures made under this order 
 will be delivered to the Sheriff of the coun- 
 ty, taking his receipt for the same in dupli- 
 cate — one of which shall be returned with 
 a report of the officer making the seizure, 
 to this office. 
 
 VII. Under the necessity which exists for 
 this order being known at the earliest day 
 possible, it is given directly to the officers 
 charged with its execution without extend- 
 ing it through the superior officers.
