JRMY,} Camp neaj Fort Smith, December 13th, 1862, 3 SOLDIERS:— On the 7th inst, at Prairie Grove, you en- gaged an abolition army largely outnumbering you. Under a furious cannonade, lasting five hours, and against repeated and desperate assauUs of the enemy's infantry, upon your whole line, you held every inch of ground and repulsed every attack. Better courage vvas never shown on any field. Texans, Missourians and Arkansians, — infantry, artillery i!U'l cavali-y^ — volunteers and coriscripts. — all alike noblv performed their duty. Your countrymen will honor y©u for it I am proud of you, and thank you. With renewed confidence in ourselves, in the justice of our cause, and the protection of Providence, let us now vig- orously prepare for other battles and still more glorieus achievements. Our future must excel our past. Besides Prairie Grove, n)any other victories must be inscribed on our colors. Our grey- haired fathers., our mothers, sisters, wives and children expect this of us. They must not be disap- pointed. Remember this :- — After one battle, the men who are first ready for the next always win it. Look, then, to your arms, your ammunition and accoutrements; btay in c^^mp; obey orders in all things. By this you will deserve and ensure success. 1\ C. HINDMAN, Major General Commanding.
