In view of the great need of more light relative to the work of the Baptist de- nomination, and in view of the fact that the rising generation, and also a great many of the old, know but little about the great work performed within the last twenty-five years, the writer of this work has undertaken to sum up, as in a nut- shell, the work of one-fourth of a century of the Cedar Creek Association. The correctness of this work depends upon the correctness of the Minutes of the Associ- ation. The writer's object will be to show what has been done and by whom the work was performed. It may seem to the unthoughtful, in viewing this little work, that it was a small undertaking, but the reader should remember that the writer has had to search over a period of twenty- six years for what is contained in it, and in order to put it within the reach of as near every one as possible the writer has endeavored to make the work short and 4 at the same time a complete history of what has been done. It is a fact that thoughts of the past bring to our memory sweet visions of so- lemnity. So, in viewing this little work, as our minds run, and as we turn from page to page and our eyes fall upon names, thoughts are suggested that cause our hearts to burn within us. By reading this work fathers and mo- thers find the names of honored sons that make glad their aged hearts. The eyes of widows now and then fall on the names of those who once were the joy of their lives, but who have been removed to the land of Spirits and are now waiting to be again united in everlasting happiness, where the sharp sickle that separated them here and covered that once happy home with a deathly gloom shall never be able to enter. The eyes of children dis- cover the names of fathers and grandfa- thers, who, beneath snow-covered heads, bore the banner of Christ until their totter- ing feet ceased to move and they were laid beneath the cold sod, or the names of those who are in the evening of their days and whose feet are wet with the 5 dews on Jordan's bank, just waiting to be called away. We further see the names of christian workers, by whose faithful ef- forts we have been brought to Christ. And as we gaze upon the scene which this little book brings before us, our thoughts turn to the sweet bye-and-bye when all those sainted ones we will meet far above the sky, and we feel inclined to soar away and be at rest. organization: The Association was organized at Cedar Creek Church in Cumberland County, N. C, where it held its first meeting Novem- ber 26th, 27th and 28th, 1858. The Association was organized with ten churches, the names of which will appear elsewhere, by a Presbytery consisting of Elders James McDaniel^and Hugh Mc- Alpin. The introductory sermon was preached by Elder Hugh McAlpin from Romans 10th chapter and 10th verse, after which Elder A. B. Alderman was elected Moderator, Brother A. A. McAs- kill Clerk, and Brother A. Melvin Treas- urer, when the Association proceeded to organize under the Constitution and Rules of Order, which may be seen by reference to the minutes of the Association. The writer cannot give the exact num- ber of churches which have been built up by the Association, but from the best information he has there have been be- tween twenty and twenty-five. 8 Churches Dismissetl to Assist Other Associations. The reader will observe that the" churches dismissed and those now in the Association are not as many as those re- ceived. The reason for the decrease in numbers is because some few have become extinct and others have changed their names when rebuilt. Ministers who have been Members of th is Association, J. McDaniel, A. By reference to the table showing the ministers who have been members of this body, we see at once that it has possessed some of the noblest ministers of the last twenty-six years, and from its ranks there have gone out into other fields some of its brightest and best talent, who are an honor to this body where ever they go. Some of 10 \ its noblest, brightest and best have been called to their reward and are doubtless waiting within the pearly gates to welcome those who in life they were instrumental in bringing to Christ, while a few remain to bear the banner and push on the Redeem- er's Kingdom. By reviewing the churches that com- posed this Association when organized, those that have been received and dis- missed, and those that still remain, it is evident to any one of sound judgment that this has been a working body. As before stated, the writer cannot tell just how many of the churches have been built up by this Association, but from the best information he has there have been between twenty and twenty-five. So the reader may see that when this body was organized it had extensive mission grounds within its bounds, and while it may not have done as much as some Asso- ciations for other objects, we have great reason to believe that, according to age and funds expended, it has outstripped any Association in the State in occupying its own grounds. We find that there have been four thou- sand five hundred and forty-four persons baptized within the bounds of the Associ- ation since its organization. We find it impossible to tell how much 2 9 has been paid out for various purposes, as some of the funds were forwarded direct to the different boards and did not come through the Association, but we can see that there has been a great deal expended. We estimate that there has been paid out by the Association between seventy-five and one hundred thousand dollars, church building not included. The great work performed by this body should encourage the churches and mem- bers to do as Caleb said to the Israelites: Numbers 13th chapter and 30th verse: — "Let us go up at once and possess it, for we are well able to overcome it." When we look back through this little work we see many precious names of those who have been active in the Lord's work and have done much towards supplying all the dark places of this Association with the light of eternal truth. But while much has been done, and nearly all our grounds have been occupied, still there are a few points where the doctrines of the bible, as we believe them, should have been preached, and there are a few churches that sometimes need help.. May the efforts and successes of the past, so 3Q wonderfully blessed by God, stimulate those who still survive to put forth greater energy than ever before — by increasing their contributions for the various objects now claiming the attention of our great and grand denomination, and on bended knees praying the Lord His work to bless in the language of Gibbons when he said: Lord send thy word and let it fly Armed with thy spirit's power; Ten thousand shall confess its sway And bless the saving hour. And then from our knees arise and sing with Kelley.: Yes, we trust the day is breaking, Joyful times are near at hand; God, the mighty God, is speaking By his word in every land. When he chooses Darkness flies at his command. While the foe becomes more dariug, While he enters like a flood; God the Saviour is preparing Means to spread his truth abroad. Every language Soon shall tell the love of God. O 'tis pleasant, 'tis reviving To our hearts to hear each day Jovial news from far arising, How the gospel wins its way, 3i Those enlightning Who in death and darkness lay. God of Jacob, high anrl glorious, Let thy people see thy hand; Let the Gospel be victorious Through the world in every land. Then shall idols Perish Lord at thy command. Amen.
