These suggestions are not binding upon the users. However, they do follow sound educational principles and have been effectively used in literacy work in the District of Columbia. Construction All of the readers are constructed in accordance with the basic principles of WPA Education Circular No. 10. These readers are prepared primarily for the teaching of silent reading. Each of the first level readers is divided into eighteen units (a unit is a section of the reader which might make up one or more lessons). A maximum of six words is introduced in each unit of the first level readers except the sixth, the twelfth and the eighteenth units. These units are for review pur¬ poses and each one contains all of the words intro¬ duced in the preceding units. The introduction of new words per unit ranges from 3 to 6 in number. 1/ A maximum of eight new words on a third level of reading difficulty is introduced in each unit of the third level readers. The range is from 6 to 8 words per unit. The third level readers follow the same general construction as the first level readers, ex¬ cept for the fact that the review units are the fifth, tenth and fifteenth. Usage In our use of these materials, five reading ap¬ proaches are used in presenting the various units of 1/ " Good Health " and " Stephen Foster Songs " are exceptions. each reader. 1/ They are (i) word-picture {<.) experi¬ ence (3) discussion (4) story (5) composite. Each approach is decided upon on the basis of unit content, the type of reading disabilities encountered, and the availability of supplies and equipment. The word-picture and the experience approaches proved to be the most usable. However, we discovered that no matter which approach is used, some type of discussion becomes a part of it. It is oub further experience that the new words in each reader should be mastered before the student is allowed to read the unit from the book. Materials and Activiti.es Flash cards, mounted picture cards, phrase cards, and word building exorcises may be used to teach mas¬ tery of the new words in each unit. Elliptical sen¬ tence exercises, truu-false work-sheets, and chart or blackboard reading may be used to test for comprehen¬ sion. Pictures Used Pictures used in most of our presentations were cut from magazines, newspapers, pamphlets and other periodicals. They were mounted upon oak tag (tag board) 8-| x 11 inches, with enough margin left at the bottom for the necessary lettering. Our home has sunshine and fresh air. Sunshine and fresh air are good. 9 GOOD t-uOD Good food helps us to keep well. We have many good foods. Our water is pure. We have safe milk. Pure water and safe milk help us. Clean homes and sunshine help us. Fresh air and good food help us. They help us to keep well. They help us to keep our health. 10 FRESH FRUITS AM VEGETABLES We eat good, foods. We eat many fresh vegetables. We eat many fresh fruits. Fresh vegetables and fruits are good foods. We need to eat many good foods. They help to keep us strong and well. 11 WE DO MANY THINGS TO KEEP WELL We can do many things to keep well. We can do many things to keep our health. We can keep our homes clean. We can keep our bodies clean. We get fresh air and sunshine. We get rest and sleep. We eat many good foods. We can do all these things to keep well. HEALTH DEPARTMENTS We need help to keep well. Health departments help us. We have a good health department. Health' departments keep our water pure. Health departments keep our milk safe. We do not have to ask for this help. Health departments do many things to help us. They do many things to keep us in good health. 13 CLINICS Our health department has many clinics. Clinics help to keep us well. Doctors and nurses work in the clinics. They can help to keep us well. The clinics can not come to us. We can go to the clinics. We ask the health department to help us. We go to the clinic to get help. SICK PEOPLE CAN NOT WORK We can not work when we are sick. Sickness keeps us away from work. Sick people can not work. We want to keep well. We want to work. We can work when we are well. We want to have good health. We want our children to have good health. 15 WHAT CAUSES SICKNESS What causes sickness? Germs cause some sickness. Germs live in dirt. They live in water and milk. They live in sick people. WHAT CAUSES SICKNESS Germs from sick people can make us sick. Germs can get into, healthy bodies. Sickness germs"'make healthy people sick. We keep away from sickness germs-. We do not want to be sick. We do not want-to have a germ ,sickness. 17 DIPHTHERIA A sign is on our friend's door. The sign says: "Diphtheria." Our friend's children have diphtheria. Diphtheria is a germ sickness. Our children keep away from our friend's home. We do not want our children to get diphtheria. WE DO NOT WANT DIPHTHERIA The nurse from the health department visits us. She wants to help us. She wants our children to keep well. The nurse wants to keep diphtheria away from our children. Shots in the arm will keep diphtheria away. The doctor in the clinic will give shots in the arm. The nurse wants our children to go to the clinic. They will have shots in .the arm. They will not get diphtheria. 19 THE CLINIC WILL HELP US We want our children to have shots in the arm. We want to keep them well. We take our children to the clinic. The doctor will give them shots in the arm. Our children will not have diphtheria. They will be safe from diphtheria. ■20 THE CLINIC WILL HELP US We can go to the clinic to get help. The clinic can not come to us. The doctors and nurses in the clinic will help us. They do not know when we need help. We must tell them when we need help. SICK PEOPLE NEED.A. DOCTOR Our little girl is sick. Sick people need help. They need help to get well. People need a doctor when they are sick. We do not know what to do for our little girl. Our friends do not know what to do. Doctors know what to do for sick people. SICK PEOPLE NEED A DOCTOR We have a good doctor. We ask the doctor to come. We do not ask our friends what to do. We ask the doctor what to do. Our doctor says she will get well. We need a good doctor when we are sick. 23 HOSPITALS ARE FOR SICK PEOPLE Our little girl is sick. She is going to the hospital. She needs rest and quiet. She' needs good care. Hospitals are for sick people. Hospitals are clean and quiet. Doctors and nurses work at the hospital. HOSPITALS ARE FOR SICK PEOPLE They work to help sick people get well. Doctors and nurses give sick people good care. The nurses will care for our little girl. The doctors will know what to do. Our little girl will rest. She will have rest and quiet. She will have good care. 25 HOSPITALS HAVE MANY THINGS FOR SICK PEOPLE Hospitals have the things doctors and nurses need- Doctors and nurses need.many things, to help sick people. 26 HOSPITALS HAVE MANY THINGS FOR SICiv PPOPlL We do not have these things at home. Doctors and nurses can work better in a hospital. They have all the things they need . to care for sick people. Our little boy will get good care in the hospital. We want our little boy to have good care. We want him to go to the hospital. 27 ALL TOWNS NEED HEALTH DEPARTMENTS Many towns do not have a health department. Our town has a good health department. My friend lives in another town. His town does not have a health department. My friend likes our town. He likes our health department. 28 ALL TOWNS NEED HEALTH DEPARTMENTS He says: "We need a health department. "We want pure water and safe milk. "We want good clinics. "We need help to keep us well. "The people in my town need. help. "They need a health department. "They will work to get a health department." 29 ALL TOWNS NEED GOOD DOCTORS Some towns do not have many doctors. Our town has many good doctors. There are no doctors in my friend's t own. My friend says: "We need good doctors. "We need doctors when we are sick. "We have no doctors in my town. "We want good doctors in our town. "How can we get a good doctor to come to our town? "We need him to help us keep strong and healthy." 30 ALL TOMS NEED GOOD HOSPITAL,3 •Some towns do not have a hospital. Our town has a good hospital. Our good doctors work there. They like to work in a good hospital. They like to work in the hospital in our town. Our hospital helps to keep ub well. My friend likes our hospital. It is clean and quiet. He likes the doctors and nurses. There is no hospital in my friend's town. 31 ALL TOWNS NEED GOOD HOSPITALS The people in his town go away to get to a hospital.- They have to go far' away t/o get to a hospital. Some people cannot go to a hospital far away. My friend's town needs a hospital. My friend wants a hospital near his home. My friend says: "We want a good hospital. "We. want good doctors and nurses. "We need the things a hospital has. "We need good care for our sick people. will all work to get a good hospital." Readers at a low level of reading difficulty have been completed in the following fields: Home and Family Living Individual Self-Development Employment, Occupations, Industry Community Relationships Consumer Problem Citizenship Health and Safety Recreation Readers at a higher level of read¬ ing difficulty are now being con¬ structed in the above fields.
