On the following pages will be found a record of the events of the great American Civil War, so far as known, compiled from the Official Records, and are as reliable as it is possible to glean the facts. Every event of authoriative record is here given. It is probable that other events of which, in the heat and confusion of battle, no official report was made, and now only remains in the memory of the partici- pants, will not be found here. Owing to the incomplete Confederate records, it is simply impossible to give accurate figures on that side, and only those are given where reliable data were procurable. While many other works, notably Colonel Fox's exhaustive work, "Regimental Losses," ably and fully occupy their field, this compilation is more in- tended for handy reference, and, as such, the Compiler trusts will be a welcome addition to the war library and invaluable to the war student.
