A wine made one year and sold the next is not a proper wine for invalids; to j^'^et rid of its coarse and injurious elements requires years for it to lay in wood easks, and by frequent drawing- olY from its j^ross sediment, or the coarse parts it becomes rich and mellow and valuable for invalids. It is sudorific, diuretic and blood makintj from the iron in the soil of the vSpeer vineyards in Northern N. J. The principal varieties are the Port, Burg^undy, Shcrrvand Claret and the Climax brandy. All these wines when stored ft)r years and drawn off from time to time in fresh fumi<^ated casks become vastly superior products and necessarily arc more expensive. This is why Speer's wines and Brandy arc more costly and so far superior to the California wines. They arc absolutely pure; unexcelled by any in the world. Speer's wines are ordered by wealthvand refined families in ICurope where they are prescribed by phvsicians and are esteemed for their superiority, velvety roundness, full body and re- fined flavor. The efficacy of these wines is wonderful. It has been a study and a pride duringf Mr. vSpeer's life to produce a wine of the hij^diest grade of perfection— not so much to make money as to cxcell in ji^cttinjif a wine of the richest character. lie has spared no labor nor expense in bring^inj^j his vineyards and wines up to the abovo h:;xh standard of excellence. The Climax * * * lirandy twenty years old is equal to the finest French brands. To be had of Drupjjists and Grocers who sell high class wines. 72 RHODE ISLAND GERMAN DIRECTORY. GRAPE HARVEST IN PORTUGAL. THE PORT GRAPES CARRIED TO THE TREADING VATS. Scene at the Vineyards of Boa Visto, valley of the Douro; Women cut the bunches of grapes into small baskets, carry them a short dis- tance and fill large baskets holding near loo pounds. Then men with sheepskins thrown over their backs, and plaited straw knots on their heads, shoulder the baskets and move off in single file down the rug- ged winding paths and flights of steps to large vats, where the grapes are mashed for wine. The soil containing a large amount of iron. I Spccr's Port * Climax Brandy is i8 years old. All are preferred where known by the Medical profession ( as sui)erior to any Pliot(.fj:rai)Ii of Chateau de Speer. that Can be had, for their excellent effect upon the system when used by invalids, the weakly and aged ]:)ersons and in general family use. Northern New Jersey climate, and soil abounding in iron is just adapted tor this grape for Port wine. It is the same kind of soil as in Portugal. vSpcer's winery and vineyards are the only Port grape vine3\Trds in the United States; only vineyards that cultivate the real Port wine ^rape of Portugal ; while other wines or mixtures called port are made without a sinjjle Oporto grape in them. Mr. Speer is the first and only one who imported the vines and acclimated the real Port wine ^riU**^ vines of Portugal. Ilespenl thousands of dollars as a hobby to see whathecould do toward acclimating these Portugal vines here. It took eight years for them to become acclimated before Mr. Speer got a single grape; during tiiose years all died except about eight hundred vines, when those began to j^row vigorous and bear fruit ; from these, layers were made lor new vines. The vineyards now cover fifty six acres. It has proven a success. The grapes are allowed to hang on the vines until they bej^in to raisin, when they have parted with some of the water and are rich in sugar; and the wine made from Port wine grapes is the only real genuine Port wine made in America. It is by far THE wine lor weakly persons, the aged and for evening entertainments. Sold by I)ruj»;j»;ists and Grocers. The juice of the Portugal Port Wine grape grown in N. J. is thick and rich same as the juice of pears and other fruits grown here. From California pe-'^.rs you can squeeze water as from a sponge; so with all fruits grown in Califor- nia; wnile those grown in New Jersey are solid in substance — less juice but thick and richer. The New Jersey apples, for instance, make a cider that was always popular the world over.
