TBI Im*\$hq- OF Ci>VRvs;|j| WASHINGTON INTRODUCTORY NOTE. The purpose of the Compilers is to secure for the Anthem its proper dignity and its rightful place in Public Worship. The Anthem is not an ornamental prelude to a service, rendered during the assembling of the Con- gregation. It is not a musical performance for the entertainment of the Congregation and for the self- display of the Choir. It is a solemn act of worship, having its lawful place in the midst of the service, wherein noble and appropriate words, usually those of Scripture, are sung by the Choir, while the Congregation silently and. reverently listen. But .the Anthem cannot become an intelligible part of Public Worship while the People remain in ignorance of the words sung by the Choir. The Compilers of this Book offer to the People a collection of "Texts of Anthems," in order that (by placing the words within sight of all) this important part of Public Worship may henceforth be recognized as a solemn praise-offering unto the Lord; wherein the Congregation may, by silent and prayerful atten- tion, co-operate with the Choir in rendering unto God this ancient and stately office of devotion. Brooklyn, N. Y., October 1888. TEXTS OF ANTHEMS. i. O Zion! blest City, whence cometh salvation ! Chosen of God for His own habitation. We burn to exalt thee, to see thee all-glorious, Rise, disenthralled, o'er thy captors victorious. We sing in gladsome chorus, Though high is Jordan's swelling river; Our Lord still goes before us, And will His flock from harm deliver ; He guides out feet, He hears our cry, And leads us on to victory. Hope ! weary heart, tho' the way be dreary, Soon thou'lt gain the blessed rest for pilgrims weary, Peace ! weary heart ; cease from care and sorrow, Rest, blessed rest awaits thee in the coming morrow. 2. Psalm xxvii. i. The Lord is my light, whom then shall I fear? the Lord is my strength ; of whom then shall I be afraid ? 16. O wait thou still upon the Lord, and He shall comfort thine heart. 5. For in the time of trouble He shall hide me in His secret place : and set me up on a rock of stone. 7. Therefore will I offer in His dwelling an oblation ; yea, will sing, and speak praises to the Lord. 3 Psalm xix. The days of man are but as grass: for he flourisheth as a flower of the field. 16. As soon as the wind goeth over it, it is gone: and the place thereof shall know it no more. 17. But the merciful goodness of the Lord endureth for ever and ever. 22. O speak good of the Lord, all ye works of His: praise thou the Lord, O my soul. 18. A Prayer. Lord, we pray Thee that Thy grace may always prevent and follow us, and make us continually to be given to all good works ; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. __ We praise Thee, O God, we acknowledge Thee to be the Lord. All the earth doth worship Thee, the Father ever- lasting. To Thee all Angels cry aloud, the heavens and all the powers therein, to Thee Cherubim and Seraphim continually do cry, Holy, Holy, Holy Lord God of Sabaoth, heaven and earth are full of the majesty of Thy glory. The glorious company of the Apostles praise Thee. The goodly fellowship of the Prophets praise Thee. The noble army of Martyrs praise Thee. The Holy Church throughout all the world doth acknowledge Thee : The Father of an infinite majesty ; Thine honorable, true, and only Son ; also the Holy Ghost, the Comforter. Thou art the King of Glory, O Christ, Thou art the everlasting Son of the Father. When Thou tookest upon Thee to deliver man, Thou didst not abhor the Virgin's womb. When Thou hadst over- come the sharpness of death, Thou didst open the king- dom of Heaven to all believers. Thou sittest at the Right Hand of God, in the glory of the Father. We believe that Thou shalt come to be our Judge. We therefore pray Thee help Thy servants, whom Thou hast redeemed with Thy precious Blood. Make them to be numbered with Thy Saints in glory everlasting. O Lord, save Thy people, and bless Thine heritage. Govern them, and lift them up for ever. Day by day we magnify Thee, and we worship Thy Name, ever world without end. Vouchsafe, O Lord, to keep us this day without sin. O Lord, have mercy upon us. O Lord, let Thy mercy lighten upon us, as our trust is in Thee. O Lord, in Thee have I trusted, let me never be confounded. 20. Psalm xxxvi. 5. Thy mercy, O Lord, reacheth unto the heavens and Thy faithfulness unto the clouds. 6. Thy righteousness standeth like the strong mountains : Thy judgments are like the great deep. 21. Zechariah vi. 12. Thus speaketh the Lord of Hosts, saying, Behold the Man Whose Name is the Branch : 13. He, even He shall build the temple of the Lord ; and He shall bear the glory, and shall sit and rule upon His throne ; and He shall be a priest upon His throne: and the counsel of peace shall be between them both. Art Thou the Christ ? Art Thou the Son ? The Father's Image bright ? And see we Him, Whose Arm upholds Earth and the starry height ? Yea, faith can pierce the cloud Which veils Thy glory now ; We hail Thee, God, before Whose throne The Angels prostrate bow. Our sinful pride to cure With that pure love of Thine, O be Thou born within our hearts, Most Holy Child Divine. Amen. 22. O saving Victim, slain for man, The gates of heaven to us expand; Fierce wars assail, the foes draw nigh; Grant succour, give us victory. 23. Psalm cvii. 23. Lie down in peace and sleep : for Thou, O Lord, makest us to dwell in safety. 24. Psalm cxxxvii. Here by Babylon's wave The heathen hands have bound us, Tho' afar from our land, The pains of death surround us ; Sion ! thy memory still In our heart we are keeping, And still we turn to thee, Our eyes all sad with weeping. Thro' our harps that we hung on the trees, Goes the low wind wearily moaning : Mingles the sad note of the breeze, With voice as sad of sigh and groaning. When mad with wine our foe rejoices, When unto their altars they throng, Loud for mirth they call — "A Song ! A song of Sion sing, lift up your voices !" O Lord, tho* the victor command Our captivity sad and lowly, How shall we raise Thy song so holy, That we sung in our father's land, Jerusalem, if we forget thee, Let our hands remember not their power, And our tongues be silent from that hour. Jerusalem, if we forget thee. Woe unto thee! Babylon mighty city, For the day* of thy fall is nigh ! For thee no hope, for thee no pity, Tho' loud thy wail riseth on high ! Then shalt thou, desolate, forsaken, Be torn from thy fanes and thy thrones. In that day shall thy babes be taken And dash'd against the stones, Then unto thee, O Babylon the mighty, Be woe, be woe, be woe ! 2 5- Job xxiii. 3. that I knew where I might find Him, that I might come even to His seat. 8. Behold, I go forward, but He is not there ; and backward, but I cannot perceive Him ; 9. on the left hand, where He doth work, but I cannot behold Him; He hideth Himself on the right hand. St. John xx. 29. Blessed are they that have not seen, and yet have believed. 26. O Saviour of the world, Who by Thy Cross and pre- cious Blood hast redeemed us, save us, and help us, we humbly beseech Thee, O Lord. 27. Psalm viii. 1. O Lord our Governor, how excellent is Thy Name in all the world : Thou that hast set Thy glory above the heavens ! 4. Lord, what is man 5 that Thou art mind- ful of him ? and the son of man, that Thou visitest him ? 5. Thou madest him lower than the angels, to crown him with glory and worship. 28. Psalm xxxi. 26. O love the Lord, all ye His saints : for the Lord preserveth them that are faithful, and plenteously re- ' wardeth the proud doer. 27. Be strong, and He shall establish your heart: all ye that put your trust in the Lord. Amen. 9- I will sing of Thy great mercies, O Lord, my Saviour, and of Thy faithfulness evermore. 3°- Psalm cxxxv. I, O praise the Lord, laud ye the Name of the Lord: praise it, O ye servants of the Lord. 2. Ye that stand in the house of the Lord, in the courts of the house of our God. 3. O praise the Lord, for the Lord is gracious, sing praises unto His Name, for it is lovely. 4, For why ? Thy Lord hath chosen Jacob unto Him- self, and Israel for His own possession. 5. For I know that the Lord is great, and that our Lord is above all gods. Amen. 3 1 - Blessed be the Lord God of Israel; for He hath vis- ited and redeemed His people ; and hath raised up a mighty salvation for us, in the house of His servant David; as He spake by the mouth of His holy Prophets, which have been since the world began ; that we should be saved from our enemies, and from the hand of all that hate us. Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost ; as it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen. 3 2 ' Psalm xxxiii. 2i. Let Thy merciful kindness, O Lord, be upon us; as we do put our trust in Thee. Amen. 33 A Prayer. Lord, for Thy tender mercies' sake, lay not our sins to our charge, but forgive that is past, and give us grace to amend our sinful lives ; to decline from sin, and incline to virtue, that we may walk with a perfect heart before Thee now and evermore. 34- Luke ii. 15. Let us now go even unto Bethlehem, and see this thing which is come to pass, which the Lord hath made known unto us. 10. For the angel said unto us, Fear not; for behold I bring you good tidings of great joy, which shall be to all people. 11. For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Saviour, Which is Christ the Lord. 35' Say, Watchman, what of the night ? Do the dews of the morning fall ? Have the orient skies a border of light, Like the fringe of a funeral pall ? The night is fast waning on high, And soon shall the darkness flee : And the morn shall spread o'er the blushing sky And bright shall its glories be. But, Watchman, what of the night, When sorrow and pain are mine ? And the pleasures of life, so sweet and bright, No longer around me shine ? That night of sorrow thy soul May surely prepare to meet : But away shall the clouds of thy heaviness roll, And the morning of joy be sweet. But, Watchman, what of the night, When the arrow of death is sped ? And the grave, which no glimmering star can light, Shall be my sleeping bed ? That night is near, and the cheerless tomb Shall keep thy body in store, Till the morn of eternity rise on the gloom. And nisfht shall be no more. 3
