This small brochure on Plumer Genealogy is compiled and published as a guide or pattern to a proper uniform arrangement of the individual family records by the many descendants of Mr. Francis Plumer. By following this arrangement of manu- scripts much confusion will be avoided, I shall be pleased to have every member of the family arrange his own records and those of his ancestors and send them to me for publication in a more complete work. I am very desirous of securing a complete list of the members of the Plummer family and their addresses. Write plainly and give full names and dates. Of the living, give occupations and full postoffice ad- dresses. Use only one side of the paper and write only one family record on a page. If acknowledgement or reply is desired please en close stamped addressed envelope or postal. Most cordially yours, 126 322 412 — Alvin Plummer. THE FIiUSCMEB SYSTEM OF GENEAIiOGICAI. Z^TUIMCCBATION. The system of enumeration herein proposed is in- vented, copyrighted and all rights to its use in any form of adaptation Sg. reserved by the undersigned. Each individual has but one reference numeral (or letter), which is determined by the order of his (or her) birth, and is suffixed to the parent's, thus serving as a complete index to all ancestors and being in turn transmitted to all descendants. Number the sons from i to o (lo) and italicize from J to (ii to 20) and letter the daughters al- phabetically in the order of their birth. The advantages of this system are: Each individual's number denotes the generation by the number of numerals (or letters) composing it; The numerals (or letters) in their order signify the correct succession of the birth of each ancestor in the family; A comparison of the numbers of any two individu- als imrhediately determines the relationship, for in- stance if two individuals have eight numerals in their designating number and the first change is in the second numeral, they are "sixth cousins," and so on until a change in the next to the last nu- meral signifies "own cousins" — if one has eight nu- merals and the other six and the first 'change is in the second numeral the relationship is "fourth cous- ins, twice removed" — the relationship of fathei, grandfather, uncle, granduncle, etc., are so obviou'* that explanation is unnecessary. Once correctly arranged additions occasion no re- vision. Dr. Alvin Plummer, 408 California Street, San Francisco, Cal. All rights reserved. Registered at Stationers' Hall, London. July 17, or Aug. 18, 1647), m. second, widow Ann Pal- mer (d. Oct. 18, 1665), Mar. 21, or 31, 1648, m. third, Beatrice, widow of William Cantle- berry, of Salem, Mass., Nov. 27 or 29, 1665; d. Jan. 17, 1672-3. He was admitted freeman May 14, 1634. Francis Plumer, and his wife, Ruth, came to New England in 1633, settled in Newbury, Mass., in 1635, by the Parker river. The farm on which he first settled is now owned and cultivated by his de- *This numeral is provisional for Francis, "adopted until future discovery shall prove the right." Should it be discovered that he had elder brothers, it will then be necessary to change this numeral in all his descendants' records to conform to the order of Francis' birth in his father's family. This same rule applies to every numerical error m.ade in Genealogical Records compiled in accordance with the Plummer System of Genealogical Enumeration. scendants. By occupation. Francis was a weaver ol linen. Coffin's History of Newbury says : "The descendants of Francis Plumer still own the land which was once his, near the Parker river. Five of his descendants and bearing his name have been members of Congress. One of them, George, son of Jonathan, was the first white child born in Penn- sylvania, west of the Alleghany Mountains. The same George was the first member of Congress sent from beyond the Alleghany Mountains. Branches of the family are said to be in every State in the Union, and in all the British provinces. Of the first settlers in New^bury, uniform tradition as- serts that they came by water from Ipswich, then Agawam, through Plum Island Sound, and up the River Quatcacunquen, now the Parker River, to the place they had selected as their future habitation. Tradition asserts that they landed on the north bank of the river, about one hundred rods below the spot where the bridge now stands, and that Nicolas Noyes was the first person who jumped ashore. Francis Plumer, followed by his wife and two sons, Samuel apd Joseph, were next to go ashore. The same year, 1635, Francis Plumer was licensed to keep an ordi- nary, that is, a tavern." One tradition asserts that Francis came from Wales, but I am not inclined to give much credence to it, inasmuch as our family still shows marked Scotch characteristics, and while both England and Scotland have many of our name, Wales has few. 1 — Samuel, b. 1619; m.
