 PREFACE 
 
 TO THE THIRD SERIES. 
 
 The Alphabet is arranged in lessons, in this little 
 book, that the child may first learn the vowels, then the 
 consonants which require a vowel after them m the 
 pronunciation, and then those which require a vowel 
 before them in pronouncing them; thus acquiring the 
 letters in distinct analytical parts. It is very injudicious 
 to teach a child the Alphabet by course, that is, to 
 commence with the letter A, and sound the who e 
 Alphabet to the child at one lesson : no child or adult 
 however strong his memoiy may be, is capable oi 
 remembering all the sounds of the Alphabet, arid the 
 characters which represent them, until he shall have 
 learned them separately, or those of nearly the same 
 sound by having them classed. 
 
 A few combinations of letters, and words of one, two, 
 and three syllables, have been inserted to aid my 
 young friends in learning the pleasing and interesting 
 art of combining letters to form worda
