Üülhereaft, The revolving year has brought again the glad season of harvest, which it has been the pious
usage of our fathers in successive generations to celebrate in a special manner with thanks and praise to God, and

Üülhereaft, It is fitting that this gracious custom should be followed by us, their descendants, who have been
blessed in equal degree with them,

§lou } therefore, I, by and with the advice and consent of the Council, appoint Thursday, the twenty-sixth day
of November current, as a day of public thanksgiving and praise to the Lord, whose merciful kindness is great toward us.
In the solemn service of the church and in the silent aspiration of the heart, let due acknowledgment be made
to the loving God who has showered his mercies upon us. Let young and old meet beneath the home roof-tree, and,
recalling the tender memory of the dead, bind more closely the bond of family affection which should unite the living.
Let kindly thought and generous act go forth from man to man. Let joy abound, and praises be sung with gladness.
We have special cause to rejoice in each new evidence that the welfare and honor of the Republic are safe in
the intelligence and honest purpose of her citizens. Inspired by the past history and great destiny of our country,
let us guard well her present, and resolve anew that her claim to loyal service at our hands shall not fall upon
unheeding ears; and from altar and hearth may the prayer ascend that as God has been to our fathers, so may
he be to us and to our children. &

sand eight hundred and ninety-six, and of the Independence of the United States of America the one hundred and
