x ; ATT I CA, N.ir: rr CATALOGUE OF HACKNEYS IMPORTED AND AMERICAN BRED STANDARD BRED MARES AND HARNESS HORSES THE PROPERTY OF FREDERICK C. STEVENS 1908 MAPLEWOOD HACKNEY STUD AND STOCK FARM ATTICA, WYOMING COUNTY, N. Y. E. T. GAY, Manager Digitized by the Internet Archive in 2009 with funding from Boston Library Consortium Member Libraries http://www.archive.org/details/catalogofhackneyOOmapl ANNOUNCEMENT MAPLEWOOD Hackney Stud and Stock Farm adjoins the corporation limits of the village of Attica, Wyoming County, New York, which is located upon the line of the New York Central & Hudson River Railroad, the Erie Railroad, and the Buffalo & Susquehanna Railroad, thirty-one miles east of Buffalo and forty-three miles west of Rochester. Passenger trains run to and from either city many times daily. All of the foundation stock at Maplewood is imported, and here may be found the blood of all the famous English Hackney sires, such as Dane- gelt, Denmark, Lord Derby 2d, Wildfire, Fireaway, Sir Charles, Performer, and Phenomenon, as well as the Double English Champions, Connaught and Ganymede. Maplewood Hackneys have been exhibited at the National Horse Show, Madison Square Garden, New York, every year for eight years. During which time they have won more Championships, more Challenge Cups, more First Prizes, and more value in prizes than all the other Hackney horses of America combined. At the head of this stud stands that peerless Hackney stallion, Langton Performer (4844) 242, pronounced by English and American horsemen, alike, to be the embodiment of all the qualities which go to make up the perfect carriage-horse sire. With him stands the Double Champion Clifton 2d (4689) 272, holder of the American Hackney Horse Society's Challenge Cup. He is probably the best representative of the English type of Hackney in the world to-day. To place Maplewood still farther ahead of all other establishments in this line, Mr. Stevens, in 1898, purchased Fandango (4256) 143, a horse that has since become the most sensational sire of the breed. This won- derful horse, a grandson of Lord Derby 2d, was never shown in America until 1899, when at the National Horse Show he won first prize for stallion over 15-2 ; first for stallion and four of his get, together with the Cham- pionship and Challenge Cup. At the same show, in 1900, he repeated the performance of 1899, winning permanently another Challenge Cup for the owner of Maplewood. It is a notable fact that only very few stallions ever won the Challenge Cup two years in succession, and of these, two are owned at Maplewood. The get of Fandango are reproductions of himself, as their prizes enumerated in this catalogue will show. Here, then, can be found not only the best stallion of the breed in America, but also the best three stallions of the breed in America. "Langton Performer" 2d, 271, the wonderful son of Champion "Lang- ton Performer" 242, has on four different occasions won the Grand Cham- pionship for best stallion, any age or breed, best calculated to get heavy harness horses, viz : At the Chicago Horse Show in 1897. At the New York Open Air Show in 1899. And at the New York State Fair at Syracuse in 1900 ; also in 1907. The proprietor of Maplewood does not depend upon sires alone to main- tain the superiority of his Hackneys, for where else in the world can you find such mares as the double champions Kathleen, Stella, Lady Sutton, Lady Valentine, Applause, and Victoria 3d, together with the World's Columbian Champion, Winnifred, and more than a score of others to be found at this farm ? Many of the above won the highest honors in England before importation, which shows that their superiority has been acknowl- edged by the best judges of both countries. In purchasing young animals at Maplewood for foundation stock, the buyer can have the advantage, not to be obtained elsewhere, of seeing the sire and dam of every one he purchases; he can also, from the large number on hand, always select young stallions and mares not too close in blood relationship. There are no stallions kept here except Registered Hackneys; but in addition to the registered Hackney mares a goodly-number of standard bred trotting mares are being bred to the Hackney stallions. Probably the best cross ever made for carriage-horse purposes is that of the Hackney stallion on the American trotting bred mare. Animals obtained by this cross have come to the front wonderfully during the past few years. Nearly all the intelligent horsemen have become satisfied that the only way to obtain true action is to breed it, and that to breed it they must patronize the horses whose ancestors have been transmitting it for nearly two hun- dred years. The following words tell the whole story: The best carriage horse in the world is the Hackney, and the best Hackneys in the world are at Maplewood. Write for particulars not given in this catalogue, or, what is always better, come in person and see for yourself. Visitors always welcome. 6 SERVICE FEES Mares Hackney other than Mares Hackneys Langton Performer, $100 . 00 $50 . 00 Clifton 2d, 100.00 50.00 Fandango, 100.00 50.00 Langton Performer 2d, 75.00 35.00 The Sirdar, 75.00 35.00 America, 50.00 25.00 Landsdowne, 50.00 25.00 Attica, 50.00 25.00 FandangoS., 50.00 25.00 Atticus, 50.00 25.00 Free Lance, 50 . 00 25 . 00 Foundation, 50.00 25.00 The owner of the stallions reserves the right to limit the number of mares served by each stallion during the season. Sons and daughters of Langton Performer have been prominent among the ribbon winners at all the principal shows ever since they were old enough to appear in the ring. One of his sons, Langton Performer 2d, has won the Championship for best coach horse of any breed wherever he has been shown for that prize. At the National Horse Show, 1901, Lang- ton Performer furnished the first prize two-year old stallion, the first prize two year old filly, the first prize yearling filly, and the third prize mares in two classes of brood mares. At the same show, for horses in harness, he furnished the winner of the Breeders' Challenge Cup and the winners of five other prizes, and at the New York State Fair, same year, he fur- nished the first prize winners in many classes, both in harness and at the lead rein, among them being Nelly Langton, who was first in her class and who, with two stable companions, won the Challenge Cup for best three harness horses in the show. At the National Horse Show, 1901, Cyrena, a four year old daughter of Langton Performer, was placed fourth in a class of forty-seven horses over 15-3, acknowledged to be the strongest class of the height ever shown in Madison Square Garden, and it is a notable fact that the only three horses placed above her were stallions, animals which, all fair-minded people say, have no business in a harness class with geldings and mares. At the National Horse Show, 1902, Cyrena won the Breeders' Challenge Cup for horses shown in single harness. AMERICAN HACKNEY HORSE SOCIETY'S CHALLENGE CUP.
