Department Resources $450,000.00 INTRODUCTION Mount Airy, "The Granite City of the Mountains," is situated in a rich and fertile valley, in Surry County, North Carolina, almost surrounded by the Blue Radge .Mountains. To the southeast can be seen Old Pilot .Mountain, the guide of pioneer days, and now the grim, stately sentinel of the sur- rounding country. To the south, wesl and north, a few miles distant, is the Blue Ridge Range, whose Lofty peaks stand out like turrets upon these everlasting walls. Mount Airy is a healthful city. It has an elevation of twelve hundred feet; an unsurpassed climatt — fanned by the mountain breezes in summer, and protected from the severe Masts of winter; it i- watered by three clear, pure streams which have their sources far up in the mountains. Nearby are several mineral springs, at one of which is a famous sum- mer resort. Mount Airy is a wide-awake, progressive city. Within tin- past ten years its population has been doubled and it is growing more rapidly today than ever before. Five thou- sand inhabitants, ; i tine waterworks and electric lighting sys- tem, splendid fire protection and electric power for sale, sew- erage systems, twelve miles of concrete sidewalks, and twenty-live miles of water mains, are some of the facts upon which we make such a statement. We are building good streets in the town and in the township of Mount Airy $80,- 000.00 is being spent in the construction of a chain of sand- clay roads. We have excellent schools — seven hundred chil- dren attended the graded schools last year. From our pub- lic high school boys and girls go to our colleges and universi- ties, and enter without < xaniinations. Just outside the corporate limits there is situated the largest granite quarry in the South. Within the town there are a number of lame manufacturing enterprises. The freight receipts paid at this office last year exceeded One-half .Million Dollars. Mount Airy is also one of the Largest to- bacco markets in North Carolina. Five million pounds of leaf tobacco sold lasl year. No town the size of Mount Airy in the State has more handsome business blocks, elegant residences, or beautiful churches. To those desiring to come to a beautiful, progressive and hospitable city. Mount Airy's people extend a cordial wel- come. 5 W. E.
