ARRANGED IN SIX STEP8. BY E. A. SHELDON, A. M., Ph. D., PRINCIPAL OF OSWEGO STATE NORMAL AND TRAINING SCHOOL, AUTHOR OP " SHELDON'S READERS,"' "READING CHARTS," " PRIMARY SPELLER," "TEACHER'S MANUAL OF INSTRUCTION IN READING," " MANUAL OF ELEMENTARY INSTRUCTION," AND "LESSONS ON OBJECTS." NEW YORK ■ : • CINCINNATI • : ■ CHICAGO AMERICAN BOOK COMPANY Copyright, 1877, By SCRIBNER ARMSTRONG, AND COMPANY W. P. 6 PEEFAOE. If teachers will follow the instructions given in the Manual, I shall have no occasion to regret the prepara- tion of this book ; but if it is used as such books may be used, it would have been better not to add another to the many facilities now afforded teachers for tne thought- less oral spelling of columns of words. It is a great convenience to the teacher to have groups- of words arranged with reference to their orthographical peculiarities; but the teacher who simply pronounces these words, with no discussion or application of theii meaning or use, comes very far short of his duty in the spelling recitation. The pupil should first get the idea which the word represents, then associate the idea with the word, and lastly, write the word. This requires the most careful and critical examination of the spelling lesson on the part of the teacher, without which, it is not possible to attain the highest success in teaching children to spell. I have not attempted to indicate the number of words, that shall be taken up at a lesson. No one can know this so well as the teacher. The words are arranged in long columns as a matter of economy. They are first grouped with reference to the vowel element in the accented syllable. In the re- views, a different classification is adopted, still based on iv PREFACE. orthographical peculiarities, but the words are so ar- ranged as to break up the former association, and thus test the pupil's ability to spell them, independent of their classification. I have omitted all rules for spelling as being cumber- some, confusing, and unreliable. Any person who would spell well, must form the habit of spelling correctly, so that, without reflection, he will be able to write rapidly and correctly. This can only be acquired by writing words over and over again, until, from mere habit, he writes them correctly. With this view, it is important that the words should be correctly written from the very first. The proper pronunciation of the words is determined, for the most part, by the accent and the classification. If the accent is on any other than the first syllable it is indicated by the usual mark. In the more advanced review lessons, the ability to syllabicate and pronounce correctly is tested, — a point to which the teacher should give careful attention. It will be observed that the book is arranged in six parts, and, in a graded school, may cover as many years, beginning with the intermediate department. With rare exceptions, I have taken Webster as au- thority in spelling, syllabication, and pronunciation. In a few instances, however, I have adopted the preference of Worcester rather than that of Webster, where it is plainly more in accordance with general usage. E. A. S. Oswego, September, 1877.
