Southerland STAFF Miss L. Elizabeth Colyer, Treasurer Moses Dock Young, Janitor Robert L. Keesler, Organist The Consecration of St. Peter's Protestant Episcopal Church Charlotte, N. C. May 15, 1921 ORDER OF SERVICE The congregation rises at entrance of the Bishop and Clergy and remains standing until the close of the first Hymn. The Bishop and Clergy pass up the aisle, repeating alter- nately the verses of the 24th Psalm: Psalm xxiv 1. The earth is the Lord's, and all that therein is: the compass of the world, and they that dwell therein. 2. For he hath founded it upon the seas: and prepared it upon the floods. 3. Who shall ascend into the hill of the Lord : or who shall rise up in his holy place ? 4. Even he that hath clean hands, and a pure heart: and that hath not lift up his mind unto vanity, nor sworn to de- ceive his neighbour. 5. He shall receive the blessing from the Lord: and right- eousness from the God of his salvation. 6. This is the generation of them that seek him: even of them that seek thy face, Jacob. 7. Lift up your heads, O ye gates; and be ye lift up, ye everlasting doors: and the King of glory shall come in. 8. Who is this King of glory: It is the Lord strong and mighty, even the Lord mighty in battle. 9. Lift up your heads, O ye gates; and be ye lift up, ye everlasting doors: and the King of glory shall come in. 10. Who is this King of glory : Even the Lord of hosts, he is the King of glory. Glory be to the Father, and to the Son: and to the Holy Ghost ; As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be: world without end. Amen. The Senior Warden Reads The Petition for Consecration, and presents the document to the Bishop. The Bishop then rises and says: Dearly beloved in the Lord; forasmuch as devout and holy men, as well under the Law as under the Gospel, moved either by the express command of God, or by the secret inspiration of the blessed Spirit, and acting agreeably to their own reason and sense of the natural decency of things, have erected houses for the public worship of God, and separated them from all unhallowed, worldly, and common uses, in order to fill men's minds with greater reverence for his glorious Majesty, and affect their hearts with more devotion and humility in his service; which pious works have been approved of and gra- ciously accepted by our heavenly Father: Let us not doubt but that he will also favourably approve our godly purpose of setting apart this place in solemn manner, for the perform- ance of the several offices of religious worship, and let us faithfully and devoutly beg his blessing on this our under- taking. The Bishop then kneels and says: eternal God, mighty in power, and of majesty incompre- hensible, whom the heaven of heavens cannot contain, much less the walls of temples made with hands ; and who yet hast been graciously pleased to promise thy especial presence, wherever two or three of thy faithful servants shall assemble in thy Name, to offer up their praises and supplications unto thee ; Vouchsafe, Lord, to be present with us, who are here gathered together with all humility and readiness of heart, to consecrate this place to the honour of thy great Name; sep- arating it henceforth from all unhallowed, ordinary, and com- mon uses ; and dedicating it to thy service, for reading thy holy Word, for celebrating thy holy Sacraments, for offering to thy glorious Majesty the sacrifices of prayer and thanks- giving, for blessing thy people in thy Name, and for all other holy offices: accept, O Lord, this service at our hands, and bless it with such success as may tend most to thy glory, and the furtherance of our happiness both temporal and spiritual ; through Jesus Christ our blessed Lord and Saviour. Amen. The Bishop then stands and makes the petitions, the con- gregation repeating the "Amen" at end of each. Regard, Lord, the supplications of thy servants, and grant that whosoever shall be dedicated to thee in this house by Baptism, may be sanctified by the Holy Ghost, delivered from thy wrath and eternal death, and received as a living member of Christ's Church, and may ever remain in the number of thy faithful children. Amen. Grant, O Lord, that they who at this place shall in their own persons renew the promises and vows of their Baptism, and be Confirmed by the Bishop, may receive such a measure of thy Holy Spirit, that they may be enabled faithfully to fulfill the same, and grow in grace unto their lives' end. Amen. Grant, O Lord, that whosoever shall receive in this place the blessed Sacrament of the Body and Blood of Christ, may come to that holy ordinance with faith, charity, and true re- pentance; and being filled with thy grace and heavenly bene- diction, may, to their great and endless comfort, obtain re- mission of their sins, and all other benefits of his passion. Amen. Grant, Lord, that by thy holy Word which shall be read and preached in this place, and by thy Holy Spirit grafting it inwardly in the heart, the hearers thereof may both perceive and know what things they ought to do, and may have power and strength to fulfill the same. Amen. Grant, Lord, that whosoever shall be joined together in this place in the holy estate of Matrimony, may faithfully per- form and keep the vow and covenant between them made, and may remain in perfect love together unto their lives' end. Amen. Grant, we beseech thee, blessed Lord, that whosoever shall draw near to thee in this place, to give thee thanks for the benefits which they have received at thy hands, to set forth thy most worthy praise, to confess their sins unto thee, and to ask such things as are requisite and necessary, as well for the body as for the soul, may do it with such steadiness of faith, and with such seriousness, affection, and devotion of mind, that thou mayest accept their bounden duty and service, and vouchsafe to give whatever in thy infinite wisdom thou shalt see to be most expedient for them. All which we beg for Jesus Christ's sake, our most blessed Lord and Saviour. Amen. The Sentence of Consecration is read by the Rev. William H. Hardin, Archdeacon of the Charlotte Convocation, and placed by the Bishop on the Communion Table. The Bishop then says: Blessed be thy Name, Lord, that it hath pleased thee to put it into the hearts of thy servants to appropriate and de- vote this house to thy honour and worship; and grant that all who shall enjoy the benefit of this pious work, may show 7 forth their thankfulness, by making a right use of it, to the glory of thy blessed Name; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. Choir and congregation sing Hymn 483. The minister says: "The Lord be with thee." The congregation answers: "And with thy spirit." All kneel and repeat in unison Our Father, who art in heaven. Hallowed by thy Name. Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done on earth, As it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, As we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation ; But deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever and ever. Amen. Amen. The minister says: "0 Lord, open thou our lips." The congregation answers: "And our mouth shall show forth thy praise." Here, all stand. The minister says: "Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost." The congregation answers: "As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen." The minister says: "Praise ye the Lord." The congregation answers: "The Lord's Name be praised." The choir and congregation sing The Venite come, let us sing unto the Lord: let us heartily rejoice in the strength of our salvation. Let us come before his presence with thanksgiving: and show ourselves glad in him with psalms. For the Lord is a great God: and a great King above all gods. In his hand are all the corners of the earth : and the strength of the hills is his also. The sea is his, and he made it: and his hands prepared the dry land. come, let us worship and fall down: and kneel before the Lord our Maker. For he is the Lord our God: and we are the people of his pasture, and the sheep of his hand. 8 worship the Lord in the beauty of holiness: let the whole earth stand in awe of him. For he cometh, for he cometh to judge the earth: and with righteousness to judge the world, and the people with his truth. Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost ; As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen. Then shall follow the proper Psalms for Whitsunday and for the Consecration service, read responsively. Psalm 122. Lcetatus sum. 1. I was glad when they said unto me : We will go into the house of the Lord. 2. Our feet shall stand in thy gates : O Jerusalem. 3. Jerusalem is built as a city : that is at unity in itself. 4. For thither the tribes go up, even the tribes of the Lord : to testify unto Israel, to give thanks unto the Name of the Lord. 5. For there is the seat of judgment: even the seat of the house of David. 6. O pray for the peace of Jerusalem: they shall prosper that love thee. 7. Peace be within thy walls : and plenteousness within thy palaces. 8. For my brethren and companions' sakes: I will wish thee prosperity. 9. Yea, because of the house of the Lord our God: I will seek to do thee good. Glory be to the Father, and to the Son: and to the Holy- Ghost ; As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be : world without end. Amen. Psalm 84 1. O how amiable are thy dwellings: thou Lord of hosts! 2. My soul hath a desire and longing to enter into the courts of the Lord: my heart and my flesh rejoice in the living God. 3. Yea, the sparrow hath found her an house, and the swallow a nest, where she may lay her young : even thy altars, O Lord of hosts, my King and my God. 4. Blessed are they that dwell in thy house: they will be always praising thee. 5. Blessed is the man whose strength is in thee: in whose heart are thy ways. 6. Who going through the vale of misery use it for a well : and the pools are filled with water. 7. They will go from strength to strength: and unto the God of gods appeareth every one of them in Sion. 8. Lord God of hosts, hear my prayer: hearken, God of Jacob. 9. Behold, God our defender: and look upon the face of thine anointed. 10. For one day in thy courts: is better than a thousand. 11. I had rather be a door-keeper in the house of my God: than to dwell in the tents of ungodliness. 12. For the Lord God is a light and defense : the Lord will give grace and worship, and no good thing shall he withhold from them that live a godly life. 13 Lord God of hosts: blessed is the man that putteth his trust in thee. Glory be to the Father, and to the Son: and to the Holy Ghost ; As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be: world without end. Amen. The congregation sits, and the minister reads the Lesson, from the 28th chapter of the Book of Genesis, beginning at the 10th verse. 10 The congregation stands and sings The Te Deum We praise thee, God : we acknowledge thee to be the Lord. All the earth doth worship thee : the Father everlasting. To thee all Angels cry aloud : the Heavens, and all the Pow- ers therein ; To thee Cherubim and Seraphim : continually do cry, Holy, Holy, Holy : Lord God of Sabaoth ; Heaven and earth are full of the Majesty of thy glory. The glorious company of the Apostles : praise thee. The goodly fellowship of the Prophets: praise thee. The noble army of Martyrs : praise thee. The holy Church throughout all the word doth acknowledge thee; The Father : of an infinite Majesty ; Thine adorable, true : and only Son ; Also the Holy Ghost : the Comforter. Thou art the King of Glory: O Christ. Thou art the everlasting Son: of the Father. Then thou tookest upon thee to deliver man: thou didst humble thyself to be born of a Virgin. When thou hadst overcome the sharpness of death: thou didst open the Kingdom of Heaven to all believers. Thou sittest at the right hand of God: in the glory of the Father. We believe that thou shalt come : to be our Judge. We therefore pray thee, help thy servants : whom thou hast redeemed with thy precious blood. Make them to be numbered with thy Saints: in glory ever- lasting. O Lord, save thy people : and bless thine heritage. Govern them : and lift them up for ever. Day by day : we magnify thee ; And we worship thy Name : ever, world without end. Vouchsafe, O Lord : to keep us this day without sin. O Lord, have mercy upon us : have mercy upon us. O Lord, let thy mercy be upon us : as our trust is in thee. Lord, in thee have I trusted : let me never be confounded. The congregation kneels, and the Bishop reads The Collects and the Summary of the Law Almighty God, unto whom all hearts are open, all desires known, and from whom no secrets are hid; Cleanse the thoughts of our hearts by the inspiration of thy Holy Spirit, that we may perfectly love thee, and worthily magnify thy holy Name ; through Christ our Lord. Amen. 11 Hear also what our Lord Jesus Christ saith. "Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind. This is the first and great commandment. And the second is like unto it; Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself. On these two command- ments hang all the Law and the Prophets." The Bishop then says: "Lord, have mercy upon us." The congregation answers: "Christ, have mercy upon us." The Bishop repeats: "Lord, have mercy upon us." Almighty Lord, and everlasting God, vouchsafe, we be- seech thee, to direct, sanctify, and govern, both our hearts and bodies, in the ways of thy laws, and in the works of thy commandments; that, through thy most mighty protection, both here and ever, we may be preserved in body and soul; through our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. Amen. On account of the postponement of the Consecration Ser- vice, the Collect, Epistle and Gospel, as appointed for the Con- secration of a Church, will be read, in place of these parts of the Whitsunday service. "Glory be to thee, Lord." After the reading of the Gospel, the Bishop and the congre- gation repeat in unison The Nicene Creed I believe in one God the Father Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth, And of all things visible and invisible : And in one Lord Jesus Christ, the only-begotten Son of God ; Begotten of his Father before all worlds, God of God, Light of Light, Very God of very God; Begotten, not made; Being of one substance with the Father; By whom all things were 12 made : Who for us men and for our salvation came down from heaven, And was incarnate by the Holy Ghost of the Virgin Mary, And was made man: And was crucified also for us un- der Pontius Pilate ; He suffered and was buried : And the third day he rose again according to the Scriptures: And ascended into heaven, And sitteth on the right hand of the Father: And he shall come again, with glory, to judge both the quick and the dead ; Whose kingdom shall have no end. And I believe in the Holy Ghost, The Lord, and Giver of Life, Who proceedeth from the Father and the Son ; Who with the Father and the Son together is worshipped and glori- fied ; Who spake by the Prophets : And I believe one Catholic and Apostolic Church: I acknowledge one Baptism for the remission of sins: And I look for the Resurrection of the dead: And the Life of the world to come. Amen. The congregation sits, and the minister gives such notices as are proper. The congregation stands and sings Hymn 469. The congregation sits, and the sermon is delivered by thei Rev. Harris Mallinckrodt, rector of Calvary Church, Louis- ville, Ky. (Rector of St. Peter's 1904-1914). At the close of the sermon, the congregation stands and sings The Doxolgy Praise God, from whom all blessings flow! Praise him, all creatures here below ! Praise Him above, ye heavenly host! Praise Father, Son, and Holy Ghost ! Amen. The congregation sits, and the Offerings are received, the choir singing an anthem. The congregation stands, the Offerings are presented by the Bishop, and the congregation sings "All things come of thee, Lord, and of thine own have we given thee. Amen." The Bishop then says: "Let us pray for the whole state of Christ's Church militant" and the congregation kneels. Almighty and everliving God, who by thy holy Apostle hast taught us to make prayers, and supplications, and to give thanks for all men; We humbly beseech thee most mercifully to accept our alms and oblations, and to receive these our prayers, which we offer unto thy Divine Majesty; beseeching 13 thee to inspire continually the Universal Church with the spirit of truth, unity, and concord : And grant that all those who do confess thy holy Name may agree in the truth of thy holy Word, and live in unity and godly love. We beseech thee also, so to direct and dispose the hearts of all Christian Rulers, that they may truly and impartially administer justice, to the punishment of wickedness and vice, and to the maintenance of thy true religion, and virtue. Give grace, heavenly Fa- ther, to all Bishops and other Ministers, that they may, both by their life and doctrine, set forth thy true and lively Word, and rightly and duly administer thy holy Sacraments. And to all thy People give thy heavenly grace; and especially to this congregation here present ; that, with meek heart and due reverence, they may hear, and receive thy holy Word; truly serving thee in holiness and righteousness all the days of their life. And we most humbly beseech thee, of thy good- ness, O Lord, to comfort and succour all those who, in this transitory life, are in trouble, sorrow, need, sickness, or any other adversity. And we also bless thy holy Name for all thy servants departed this life in thy faith and fear; beseeching thee to give us grace so to follow their good examples, that with them we may be partakers of thy heavenly kingdom. Grant this, O Father, for Jesus Christ's sake, our only Media- tor and Advocate. Amen. A pause at the close of the above Prayer will allow persons, who do not desire to remain for the service of Holy Com- munion, to withdraw. The Bishop proceeds with the Communion Service. At the close of the service, is sung The Recessional Hymn 491 14 THE RECTORS OF ST. PETER'S EPISCOPAL CHURCH 1845 to 1921 1846— Rev. A. F. Olmsted. 1847— Rev. T. S. W. Mott. 1852— Rev. John H.
