Traveler s Guide to Information Sources The United States Travel Service, as the national tourism office, maintains an extensive library of tourism information on the United States. But because of the sheer size of the country, the diversity of attractions and facilities, and the wealth of information provided by other Government agencies and by regional, State and city tourism offices, USTS cannot be a depository of all available pamphlets and brochures on tourism. This booklet is, therefore, prepared to direct the traveling public here and from abroad to the correct sources for further information and assistance. ^qUJT'O/V 9 f i r, o Contents General Tourist Information State and City Tourism Offices 4 Highway Welcome Centers 12 National Park Service 16 Language Assistance for International Visitors Gateway Receptionists 20 Hotels with Language Certifications 21 Toll Free "Travel-Phone USA" 21 Language Banks 21 American Council for Nationalities Service 23 Foreign Currency Exchange Deak-Perera Group 25 Banks in Various Cities 26 Emergency Assistance for International Visitors Travelers Aid International Social Service of America 30 Immigration and Naturalization Service 33 The Federal Information Centers 34 Embassies and Consulates 37 Bibliography 40 State and City Tourism Offices Many organizations, both Government and private, disseminate tourist information as a public service. Almost all of the fifty States and the various territories of the United States have Government financed tourism offices which provide tourism information about their areas. Many of the States have welcome centers located on major highways near their borders. Maps, brochures and often free coffee and refreshments can be obtained at these centers. Nearly every city has a visitor's bureau, a convention center or a chamber of commerce with people willing and anxious to inform visitors about their city or region. Following is a list of State and territorial tourism offices. A select listing of city convention and visitors bureaus and chambers of commerce is also included for the reader's convenience. The city listing is by no means comprehensive. Please consult the World Wide Chamber of Commerce Directory for additional information. Most of the natural wonders are now on nationally owned public lands administered, for the enjoyment of all, by the Department of the Interior through its National Park Service. The National Park Service is also responsible for the preservation of national monuments and national historical sites. The administration of these monuments and parks falls under nine regional offices. For instance, the National Capital Parks, one of the regional offices, provides information on all the monuments and historical sites in the Washington, D.C. area, including the White House. On the following pages is a map of the National Park System with complete addresses of all the nine regional offices, as well as a list of select national parks. For a complete listing of national parks and monuments, write to the Headquarters of the National Park Service, Washington, D.C. 20240. The readers are reminded that many of the States also have elaborate park systems. For instance, the world famous Niagara Falls is administered by the New York State Conservation Department. Information on State parks can generally be obtained through State tourism offices. CROI Language Assistance for International Visitors Great strides have been made in bridging the language barrier between international visitors and the United States as a host country. The United States Travel Service has, with the cooperation of airport and city authorities, established a multilingual receptionists program at major gateway airports to welcome and assist visitors from abroad. A hotel/motel language certification program makes it possible for the visitors to pick a hotel or motel where specific foreign languages are spoken. The United States Travel Service actively promotes this service and issues appropriate certificates to participating hotels and motels. ■'TRAVEL PHONE USA", a toll-free nationwide multilingual travel information service is a free service, courtesy of TraveLodge International, in cooperation with the United States Travel Service. In addition, many volunteer organizations throughout the country maintain language banks where a visitor can be put in touch with Americans who speak the visitor's language. Airports with Multilingual Gateway Receptionists Multilingual receptionists in red, white and blue uniforms are usually found in the Federal Inspection Areas at the folowing gateway airports: Bangor International Airport Boston-Logan International Airport Chicago-O'Hare International Airport Hawaii International Airport* Los Angeles International Airport Miami International Airport New York J. F. Kennedy International Airport Philadelphia International Airport San Francisco International Airport San Juan International Airport Seattle-Seatac International Airport Washington, D.C. Dulles International Airport * Services to begin July 1976 20 Hotels and Motels with Multilingual Staff Language Banks Since the inception of USTS' language certification program, more than 4,000 hotels and motels have been certified for one or more of the following five languages: French, German, Italian, Japanese and Spanish. Most of these certified hotels and motels are listed in the Mobil Travel Guides and in the Hotel and Motel Red Book, with symbols indicating which of the five languages are spoken. These are standard reference books which can be found in most public libraries and bookstores. Both publications are used extensively by travel agents here and abroad. Travel Phone USA Through the courtesy of TraveLodge International, a visitor unfamiliar with the English language can dial 1-800-255-3050, a toll-free number, and obtain travel information in French, German, Japanese and Spanish. During emergencies, the multilingual operators at TraveLodge will also act as interpreters over the phone. A welcome card for the international visitors bearing this information in four languages is distributed by the USTS abroad and at the gateway airports. Reprints of these cards for distribution to visitors can be obtained by writing to the Visitor Services Division, United States Travel Service, Department of Commerce, Washington, D.C. 20230. Many of the community volunteer organizations maintain listings of local residents who speak a foreign language and who are willing to offer assistance to international visitors as needed. Please note that the language bank volunteers generally offer their services unselfishly and without any remuneration. Many of its 82 member agencies maintain aid stations at air. bus and rail terminals. If the emergency consists of problems with visa or entry requirements, the U.S. Immigration and Naturalization Service has branch offices in most of the 50 States. For more complex problems involving Government regulations, the Federal Information Centers should be contacted. It is, however, recommended that in cases of personal emergencies foreign visitors contact their own embassies. Almost all nations of the world have embassies in Washington, DC: many have consulates in major cities throughout the United States. For more details on the above see the following pages. The Travelers Aid International Social Service of America has a long history of service to foreign nationals. Their experience in helping people from diverse culture background makes them invaluable to international visitors in distress. Following is a list of some of the member agencies and their various stations at air, bus and rail terminals. Most of the stations are staffed by volunteers.
