This report includes an analysis of the information on the 1-94 visa forms which all foreign visitors (except Canadians) are required to fill out when they enter the United States States. The analysis provides information on the characteristics and travel patterns of foreign visitors who come to the U.S. from various regions, countries and cities throughout the world. Purpose, and Objectives The purpose of this study is to provide marketing information on charac- teristics and travel patterns of foreign travelers to the U.S. by country and major metropolitan area of residence through analyses of existing government forms 1-94. The study does not provide data on Canadian visitors since Canadian visitors are not required to fill out the 1-94 form,, Specifically, the analysis provides information by country and metropolitan area of residence on the following items. 1. Purpose of trip (Based on Visa) 2. Length of stay 3. Age 4. Flag of carrier used 5. Country of embarkation 6. Port of U.S. entry and departure 7. A destination in the U.S. where the visitor can be contacted 8. First outbound destination Methodology Data are presented for 24 key tourist-generating countries as follows: Europe Belgium Denmark France Germany (West) Italy Netherlands Norway Sweden Switzerland United Kingdom Latin America & West Indies Argentina Bahamas Brazil Colombia Dominican Republic Mexico Venezuela Far East Asia/Oceania Australia Hong Kong Japan Korea New Zealand Philippines Thailand The statistics found in Table 1 are based on a random sample of all Forms 1-94 for Calendar Year 1972 stratified by country. Statistics in Tables 2 and 3 are based more on a quota sample, however, to enable the samples for the individual cities to be of sufficient size to analyze the specified factor s„ The actual sample sizes for each country and city are found on the respective tables. TABLE 1 Table 1 provides a breakdown of arrivals to the United States by country and major metropolitan area of residence. Major Metropolitan Area of Residence During 1972, the U.S. received 1,301,385 visitors from Europe, an increase of 17.07, over 1971 The seven largest European country generators of visitors to the U.S. --United Kingdom, Germany, France, Italy, Netherlands, Switzerland, and Sweden — provided 1,049,471 visitors or 82% of the total European visitors. Fifteen cities in Europe each provided the U.S. with over 10,000 visitors. The total number of visitors from these 15 cities was 487,245 or 377, of the total European visitors during 1972: London (city and suburbs) 178,807 Paris (city and suburbs) 79,227 Rome 32,323 Liverpool 27,210 Amsterdam 20,524 Milan 20,063 Munich 16,613 Hamburg 16,613 Zurich 15,807 B ir mingham 15,548 Manchester 15,548 Berlin 14,240 Frankfurt 11,866 Southhampton 11,661 Rotterdam 11,195 487,245 The major USTS markets in Europe (U.K., Germany, France) accounted for 781,387 visitors or 60% of the total European visitors in 1972. Of the 15 cities listed above, ten (797,) are located in the U.K., Germany and France„ Foreign visitors who traveled to the U.S. in 1972 from non-European countries generally came from only one or two cities per country. For example, 76% of the arrivals from the Bahamas resided in Nassau and Freeport; 61%, of the arrivals from Australia resided in Melbourne and Sydney; 727, of the visitors from Venezuela were from Caracas and Maracaibo; and 45%, of the visitors from Japan were from Tokyo and Osaka. TABLE 2 Characteristics of Foreign Visitor Trips to the U.S. Total Overseas Visitors : In 1972, an estimated 67% of the overseas visitors to the U.S. embarked from their own country of residence, while aa estimated 8% entered the U.S. from Canada, Mexico and the Caribbean, and about 25% entered the U.S. from other countries. Upon leaving the U.S., an estimated 667, of the visitors departed directly for their own country of residence, while 7%, traveled to Canada, Mexico and the Caribbean, and 27% departed for other countries The primary U.S. port used by overseas visitors to embark and debark in 1972 was New York: U.S. Port of Entry New York City 40% Miami 12 Honolulu 12 Los Angeles 8 Chicago 6 Seattle 2 Other 20 U.S. Port of Departure New York City 38% Honolulu 14 Miami 11 Los Angeles 6 Chicago 5 Seattle 2 Other 24 The primary destination in the U.S. where overseas visitors could be contacted in 1972 was New York City (21%) , followed by California (an estimated 15% of overseas visitors), Florida (8% of overseas visitors) and Hawaii (67o of overseas visitors). As expected, the East Coast destinations were generally the U.S. contact addresses of European visitors, while the West Coast destinations were generally the U.S. contact address of the Japanese. Visitors from Mexico : Ninety-one percent of the visitors to the U.S. from Mexico entered the U.S. directly from Mexico in 1972. Ninety- two percent of the Mexicans departing the U.S. departed directly to Mexico, while 7% departed to other countries before returning to Mexico. About 417o of the Mexican visitors entered the U.S. through Texas ports and 43% departed the U.S. via Texas ports „ The primary destination in the U.S. where Mexican visitors could be contacted in 1972 was the Southwest (38%), followed by California (25%). TABLE 3 Table 3 provides information on selected characteristics of foreign visitor arrivals such as purpose of their trip, length of stay, age and the flag of carrier they used. The d ata on the age and length of stay of foreign visitors is presented in greater detail in Tables 4 and 5. Purpose of Visit (Based on Visa) The majority of overseas visitors to the U.S. in 1972 came for "pleasure". Based on the 1-94 sample, approximately 77% of the overseas visitors came to the U.S. for pleasure, 19% for business, 2% were transits and 2% were students. The 1-94 sample differs somewhat with the tabulation of all 1-94 forms on the purpose of trips to the U.S. by foreign visitors, insofar as the complete tabulation shows that 77% of the overseas visitors came to the U.S. for pleasure, 13% for business, 8% were transits and 3% were students. (See Table 3) The purpose of travel to the U.S. of persons from the major USTS markets in 1972, according to the complete tabulation, was as follows: 6 Country Business PI easure Students Transit Mexico 1% 98% * 1% Japan 18 79 1 2 United Kingdom 15 76 1 8 Germany 15 81 1 3 France 17 77 1 5 * Less than 1% Flag of Carrier Based on the 1-94 survey, approximately 38% of the overseas visitors to the U.S. in 1972 came on U.S. scheduled carriers . Visitors from the Bahamas represented the highest proportion as 77% of the Bahamian visitors to the U.S. used U.S. scheduled carriers. On the other hand, Denmark represented the lowest proportion, as only 147, of the visitors from Denmark used U.S. scheduled carriers „ The proportion of visitors from the major USTS markets who used U.S. scheduled carriers when traveling to the U.S. in 1972 was as follows: Mexico (43%), Japan (39%), United Kingdom (407,) , Germany (26%), and France (31%). About 2%, of the overseas visitors to the U.S. in 1972 used U.S. supplemental carriers . The percent of visitors from the major USTS markets who used U.S. supplemental carriers when traveling to the U.S. in 1972 was: Mexico (JJ/o) , Japan (1%), United Kingdom (2%), Germany (12%), and France (3%). Approximately 43% of the overseas visitors in 1972 traveled to the U.S. on their national flag carrier . The percent of visitors from the major USTS markets who used their national carrier when traveling to the U.S. in 1972 was as follows: Mexico (11%,), Japan (51%), United Kingdom (447,) , Germany (387,), and France (48%). About 157, of the visitors to the U.S. from overseas countries used foreign flag carriers that were not owned by their country or by the U.S. Approxi- mately 22% of the visitors from Mexico used foreign flag carriers not owned by their country or by the U.S. TABLE 4 Age Distribution of Business and Pleasure Visitors Table 4 presents data on the age distribution of business and pleasure visitors to the U.S. in 1972 and the median age of these two types of visitors.
