CONSUMER'S GUIDE TO TRAVEL INFORMATION Helpful information sources hether you're considering a weekend at a nearby attraction or a cross-coun- try trek, pre-planning is the key to the success of any trip in your future. And a major ingredient for planning is up-to- date information about the destinations and attrac- tions which interest you. This brochure is a helpful guide to Federal and State government agencies which can provide in- formation and assistance in planning your trip. < The National Park Service America's National Park System offers myriad opportunities for fun and relaxation against a back- drop of some of Nature's most picturesque scenery. And the system includes not only the areas set aside as National Parks, but also historic battlefields and memorials, and scenic parkways, reservoirs, sea- shores, lake shores and riverways. Most of the areas have camping and/or picnicking facilities, and, in some cases, swimming, scuba diving, water skiing, fishing and boating are available. For a complete listing of areas administered by the National Park Service, write to Public Inquiries, National Park Service, Washington, D.C. 20240, or to one of the nine National Park Service Regional Offices listed below. Also included below is a partial list of the parks, monuments, historic sites and other areas in the National Park System. Many of the areas listed— we've identified them with an asterisk C^) — are new or off-the-beaten track and do not suffer the signif- icant overcrowding evident in some of the better- known parks. USTS encourages you to choose these lesser-used areas whenever possible during your travels. They contain as much of the nation's beauty and portray as vividly the heritage of our land as do the better-known parks. You will find almost everything you can see in the more popular parks— except crowds. Information can be obtained by writ- ing directly to the area in which you are interested or to the Office of Public Inquiries, Room 1013, Na- tional Park Service, Washington, D.C. 20240. Guidebooks, like the Mobil Travel Guides or the Tour Book series published by the American Auto- mobile Association, can be found in most libraries and in many commercial bookstores. These guides provide information about accommodations, res- taurants, sightseeing opportunities and special at- tractions available at any number of destinations across the country. Your travel agent is another good source of information. In addition to providing general infor- mation about vacation destinations which suit your particular interests, your agent can make reserva- tions for your transportation, accommodations, special sightseeing tours, etc., for you. And, in most cases, his/her service costs you, the consumer, nothing. In addition, you can obtain information from many transportation companies, hotels or motels by using their respective toll-free national telephone numbers. Many of these numbers can be found in the Yellow Pages of your telephone directory, and there is also a directory of such numbers, called Travel '800', published by Cabell Travel Publica- tions, 11411 Cumpston Street, North Hollywood, California 91601. You can also ask the Long Distance Information operator for the number of the Chamber of Com- merce or Convention and Visitors Bureau in the area to which you plan to travel. These organizations will provide general information brochures and/or an- swer specific questions about the facilities in their respective areas. If you prefer, the State govern- ment tourism offices mentioned earlier in this bro- chure can usually tell you how to get in touch with these city, county and regional organizations. The inclusion of companies, organizations and offerings in this brochure does not constitute endorsement, and exclusion does not imply disapproval United States Travel Service, the US Department of Commerce agency which is the National government tourism office, welcomes your comments and suggestions Please write to United States Travel Service.
