This catalog is a guide to locating and ordering the particular energy information you require. Energy topics covered include solar, nuclear, wind, geother- mal, solid waste, and fossil. Besides ordering any number of single technical reports you may arrange for a standing order micro- fiche distribution that will speed energy reports to you according to your specifications as soon as they are received at NTIS. Or you may prefer the weekly Energy Abstract Newsletter, or some of the several hundred Energy Published Searches. When you have selected the reports, subscriptions, and standing order services that suit you best, you may order directly, using the order form on page 41. Or, you may consult with an NTIS specialist by tel- ephoning (703) 487-4642. Descriptions of other NTIS products and services may be requested using the order form for free material on page 39. 750,000-item bibliographic Energy Data Base from DOE The world's largest and most comprehensive bibli- ographic data base on energy is maintained by the Department of Energy's Technical Information Cen- ter, Oak Ridge, TN and is available for lease through NTIS. The Energy Data Base (EDB) includes more than 750,000 items. This is primarily a bibliographic data base relat- ing to research, development, and demonstration projects on all aspects of energy. The EDB originated in the information programs of the Atomic Energy Commission and the Energy Research and Develop- er, S. Depository Copy ment Administration (ERDA), all since absorbed into DOE. The information is stored in digital form and includes citations, abstracts, and indexes for use by DOE and the general public in the United States. Citations consist of all the data elements that describe and uniquely identify a particular infor- mation item. These include title, author's name, issu- ing source, type of literature, language of the item, name of the journal (when articles are selected from journals), page count, identifying numbers, sourc- es of availability, and prices. Abstracts are includ- ed in the data base so that users can determine whether they wish to obtain a complete text. EDB items are indexed by subject within the fol- lowing categories: Solar Energy (also includes Tidal and Wind Power) Geothermal Energy Fossil and Synthetic Fuels Coal Petroleum and Natural Gas Oil Shales and Tar Sands Hydrogen Other Synthetic and Natural Fuels Fusion Energy Nuclear Energy Nuclear Fuels Nuclear Power Plants Nuclear Reactor Technology Energy Conservation, Consump- tion, and Utilization Energy Policy and Management Energy Storage Energy Conversion Advanced Automotive Systems Electric Power Engineering (includes MHD, Cryogenics, and Superconducting Transmission) Environmental Sciences Biomedical Sciences, Health, and Safety Physical Research Chemistry Physics Materials Geosciences Engineering Particle Accelerators Instrumentation Explosions Isotope and Radiation Source Technology General and Miscellaneous EDB Subject Thesaurus Permutated Listing Entry to a large multidisciplinary thesaurus con- taining both single and multiword descriptors pre- sents problems to the experienced as well as the new user. This permutated listing has been prepared to alleviate these problems. Each descriptor has been permutated according to each significant word in single and multi-word entries and listed alphabetically. This type listing will (1) provide the user with the correct thesaurus entry and (2) permit review of generically related de- scriptors separated by alphabetization in the Energy Data Base: Subject Thesaurus. Price: $14. Order DOE/TIC-7,000-R5(App.) Energy Information Data Base Subject Thesaurus and Index The Energy Data Base: Subject Thesaurus con- tains the standard vocabulary of indexing terms (descriptors) developed and structured by the techni- cal staff of the Technical Information Center of DOE as part of its subject indexing activities for the build- ing and maintenance of energy information data bases. This structured vocabulary reflects the scope of DOE research, development, and technological programs and encompasses terminology derived not only from the basic sciences but also from the areas of energy resources, conservation, safety, environ- mental impact, and regulation. The terminology of this thesaurus controls the sub- ject searching of the Energy Data Base (EDB) avail- able on the DOE online retrieval systems, DOE/ RECON and on several commercial online retrieval systems. The terminology is also used for the sub- ject control of other TIC data bases available only on DOE/RECON. Descriptors are added to the thesaurus when a document contains a concept for which there is no adequate term or terms in the thesaurus. The fifth revision of the Subject Thesaurus incorporates terms added to the vocabulary since the fourth revision and modifications made to the structure of existing terms. There are over 25,000 entries. Price $40. Order DOE/TIC-7.000-R5. In addition, a permutated index has been provided as an access point to multiword descriptors. Price $14. These may be brief promotional or explanatory booklets published by NTIS' sources to describe their programs and missions for the general public. Sometimes these publications are inadvertently included by the source agencies in the hundreds of new technical reports reaching NTIS daily. They are entered into the an- nouncement process and priced as tech- nical reports without their special char- acter being noted. If you receive such a report and are not satisfied with it, please return it for a refund. 19 Published searches offer low-cost energy research information Published Searches are collections of topical computerized research summaries specially search- ed online by NTIS analysts. Some 3,000 individual searches cover a multiplicity of technical categories. Most searches contain between 100 and 200 different summaries (abstracts). The price of each search is $35. Most of the research reports in the NTIS Bibli- ographic Data Base from which the summaries are abstracted are available in their full texts from NTIS. Besides containing research summaries from the NTIS data base, Published Searches contain abstracts from several other Government and non- Government data bases. The full texts of these sum- maries, if they are not provided by NTIS, can be requested from the data base owners. Many Published Searches produced from 1981 onward contain a title list and a subject index. Published Searches may be ordered from the NTIS master catalog of about 3,000 searches (order PB82-105024, $5, refundable) or from several smaller catalogs, each of which covers one or two subject areas, such as energy (see page 39). Published Search examples The following list of Published Searches relates to energy topics. It is a very small sampling of what is available (ask for the free Energy Published Search catalog, PR-668). Each of the following Pub- lished Searches is listed by title and dates designating the period covered by the Search; then the number of summaries in the search and the search order number. Two types of information sometimes appear in parentheses after the titles: (1) A number specifying how many summaries comprise the Search. (2) The initials of the data base sources of the abstracts, such as (Ei) Engineering Information, Inc.; (IAA) Inter- national Aerospace Abstracts; (API) American Petro- leum Institute; (EDB) Energy Data Base. Published Searches are $35 each 20 Alcohol Fuels. Nov. 81-Jan. 83, (330) (NTIS) PB83-803106. Coal Gasification and Liquefaction: Economic Aspects. 1972-Jan. 83, (262) (IAA) PB83-859900. They calculate the heating and cooling loads for each space for each hour of a year, while simulating the operation and response of equipment (oil, gas or sun). A user oriented building descrip- tion language facilitates describing the building geometry. Standard output reports are produced by the RPTGEN program. Weather data tapes for 60 U.S. cities and 15 California climate zones are available. NTIS then assumed responsibility for main- taining and updating SSIE's research-in-progress data base. SSIE had operated under contract to NTIS (through congressional appropriations) for the past two years under conditions that SSIE become self-supporting by the end of FY 84. Considering the financial uncer- tainty of the future, the SSIE Board of Directors con- cluded that the corporation should cease operation. SSIE had been a central source of information on federally supported research in progress, including energy projects, over the last 10 years. Federal agen- cies provided SSIE with abstracts of ongoing re- search projects from which SSIE produced computer printouts in various subject areas, for sale to the public. The SSIE data base includes records describing about 300,000 current research projects funded by Federal agencies. About 100,000 records are added annually. (Of these about one-third describe new research and about two-thirds describe contin- uing projects). Monthly updates of the former SSIE data base will be leased by NTIS to the major online vendor sys- tems assuring continuing public accessibility. Telephone (703) 487-4808 for current information. NASA energy bibliography Coverage includes regional, national, and inter- national energy systems; research and development on fuels and other sources of energy; energy conver- sion, transport, transmission, distribution, and storage with special emphasis on the use of hydro- gen and of solar energy. The product is in three sections. The first section is a keyword-out-of-context title index in which super- fluous words such as "an," "of," "the," etc., and high occurence words such as "annual," "report," "volume," etc., have been omitted. Each individual entry under a common indexed word contains the full title, report data, number of pages, report num- ber, price, availability, and accession/report number. This index can be used to locate the item number and price when only the title is known. The second section is a listing by accession/report number. The third section is an author index file with the author's name as the index term. The initial collection contains all 550,000 NTIS reports announced from July 1964 through December 1978. Additional retrospective indexes are offered in two-year segments (1979-1980 and 1981-1982). The current NTIS Title Index is a quarterly cumula- tion of new publications. Approximately 17,500 new titles are added each quarter. The cumulations are merged quarterly on a two-year cycle. The Index is published within two weeks after the closing of the final Government Reports Announcement & Index for the quarter. Price when subscription is in force during both years of any two-year cumulating cycle is $400; when subscription is entered during second year of any two-year cumulating cycle, $300. Order: PB83-916000. The following retrospective Indexes are available: Retrospective Index 1964-1978, PB80-139900 ($600). Retrospective Index 1979-1980, PB80-916099 ($100). A quarterly index of your category selections, in paper or fiche, is optional. Each microfiche has space for 98 pages of text arranged in its 4x6 inches (105mm x 148.75mm) of film, and may be read easily with any microfiche viewer. You can easily carry the microfiche equivalent of fifty 300-page books in one pocket. You don't have to wait to track down a specific report, order it, and wait for reprinting if it's out of stock. You get the full report, complete with every illustration and notation. By the time you would ordinarily have read of a report's availability, that report could have been selected by SRIM and have been sent on its way to you. The usefulness of a SRIM subscription can be extended and increased through the use of the quar- 30 terly SRIM Index in paper and microfiche. Each Index is individually prepared so as to list only the microfiche covered by a particular subscription. Here is an example of Selected Research in Microfiche in use: Energy/Energy Use, Supply, and Demand: 480 complete report texts sent during a 12-month period would cost the (SRIM) customer $528. The same titles ordered individually as micro- fiche would have cost $2,160; and paperbound about $6,240. Ask for a detailed description of SRIM cat- egories in your area of interest, on page 39. All NTIS abstracts in biweekly volume Summaries of all the U.S. Government research reports received by NTIS are published in biweekly volumes that include five indexes. Coverage is com- prehensive—about 70,000 new summaries annually, more than 7,000 pages— and is indexed by key words, personal and corporate author, Government contract/ grant, and report numbers. The Government Reports Announcements & Index (GRA&I) is designed for librarians, technical infor- mation specialists and others used to working with technical information terms and sources. GRA&I annual subscription: $325. Multiple sub- scriptions ordered at the same time for the same address are sold at a 15 percent discount. Tech Notes includes energy Tech Notes are one- or two-page fact sheets often illustrated, of new technological applications developed by certain Federal agencies and their contractors. Tech Notes are sold by subscription in one or more of the following categories: Computers; Electrotechnology; Energy; Engineer- ing; Life Sciences; Physical Sciences; Machinery and Tools; Materials; Manufacturing; and Testing & Instrumentation. The fact sheets are produced by Agencies such as the Department of Energy (Energygrams), the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA Tech Briefs), The Department of the Army, and National Bureau of Standards. The annual subscription prices are: $60 for one category; $110 for two; $155 for three; $195 for four; $230 for five; and $250 for six or more. Subscriptions must be mailed to a single address. 31 NTIS Bibliographic Data Base All of the research summaries announced by NTIS are included in the NTIS Bibliographic Data Base (on magnetic tape). Most are complete bibliographic citations and may be used to create a wide variety of information products. Users of the NTIS Bibliographic Data Base are uniquely able to search a multiplicity of technical information. There is no need for the user to acquire familiarity with different search strategies in order to search the several source tapes contributing to the NTIS file. Such "single" searching saves both com- puter and communication costs. The magnetic tape containing the data file may be leased annually, and files back to 1964 may be acquired. Current tapes are shipped to subscribers biweekly. Use fees are charged quarterly and based on factors such as the number of citations displayed or searches performed and the possibility of third party use. Nonbibliographic Data Bases NTIS has assembled a wide variety of non-biblio- graphic machine-readable data files pertinent to business and scientific interests. The present col- lection of some 700 statistical, numeric and textual source data files on magnetic tape originates from more than 50 Federal agencies. The NTIS collection of data files includes economic and social time series from the Bureau of Labor Sta- tistics, health and vital statistics from the National Center for Health Statistics, nutrition and food consumption data from the U.S. Department of Agri- culture, and regulatory licensee data files from the Federal Communications Commission. Additionally, the Department of Energy has input much of the sta- tistical information collected in its surveys and regulatory activities. Recent additions to the collection include the latest versions of the Federal Supply Code of Manufac- turers, FIPSPUB 55/Codes for Named Populated Places in the U.S., and the National Drug Code Direc- tory; the CLMS (CETA) Public Use Tapes, the Labor Surplus Area Zip Code Reference and the Public Use Energy Statistical Data Base. The Directory of Computerized Data Files contains abstracts and availability information for all data files in the NTIS collection. Copies of this publication are available for $40. Order PB83- 127605. Updates are published periodically. 32 Magnetic Tape Products Data files and computer software sponsored by the Federal Government have been made available by NTIS since 1967. As a result NTIS has assembled a wide variety of software and data files, pertinent to business and scientific interests, that are available for sale or lease. The present collection contains more than 2,000 data files and computer programs from more than 100 Federal agencies. These cover an array of subject fields: statistics, finance, edu- cation, demography and population, health statistics, building technology, energy sources, environmental pollution and control, and many others. Buyers for foreign destinations should read "How to Pay, " on page 36. Rush Handling and Premium Service do not apply to machine-readable products. RUSH HANDLING is for customers who must have immediate delivery. Rush Handling guarantees that a particular order will be filled at NTIS within 24 hours of receipt. Rush Handling orders receive immediate validation, verification of availability, and individual hand pro- cessing through inventory control and the warehouse; priority printing if production from film is required, and priority mailing. Rush Handling orders for mailing rather than pickup are accepted only from customers having NTIS Deposit Accounts or American Express, VISA, or MasterCard Accounts. Rush Handling orders may be placed only by tele- phone, telegram, Telex, Telecopier (see key tele- phone numbers on page 44), or by customers in person; not by mail. Customers must use order numbers. Rush Handling for delivery to customers in the United States by First Class Mail adds $10 to the cost of each item or copy ordered. Outside the United States Air Mail adds $12.50 to each item or copy ordered. Rush Handling for pickup in Springfield, Va., or Washington, D.C., adds $6 to the cost of each item or copy ordered. PREMIUM SERVICE is a day-and-night toll-free telephone ordering procedure ensuring that if an order is not processed and mailed within four to nine days to NTIS Deposit Account or American Express, VISA, or MasterCard customers, the $3.50 charge will be waived. Customers must use order numbers. Titles alone cannot be accepted in this procedure. All Deposit Account, American Express, VISA, and MasterCard customers receive Premium Service identification numbers with which they may place toll-free telephone orders at any time. Premium Ser- vice benefits besides toll-free calls include 24-hour availability, no busy signals, simplified ordering tech- niques (details with the identification number), postage savings, and priority mail. Premium Service adds $3.50 to the cost of each item ordered. REGULAR SERVICE includes optional priority mail delivery ($3 North America; $5 outside) and optional pickup in Springfield or downtown Washington. Current parcel post deliveries using the U.S. Postal Service are usually completed within 9 to 30 days. 35 ONLINE ORDERING: Two commercial vendors of the NTIS Bibliographic Data Base offer their custom- ers the convenience of online ordering of NTIS docu- ments. They are the Systems Development Corpora- tion (SDC) and Dialog. Both permit their customers to charge NTIS Deposit Accounts for orders that are transmitted daily to NTIS. Inquiries should be addressed to SDC, 2500 Colorado Avenue, Santa Monica, CA. 90406 and to Dialog, 3460 Hillview Ave- nue, Palo Alto, CA. 94304. TELEX: Ordering from NTIS may be speeded by the use of Telex. Customers may charge their Deposit Accounts or credit cards. How to pay The prices in this catalog cover sales in the Unit- ed States, Canada, and Mexico. Foreign orders should be placed through the foreign sales agencies for NTIS products (list available on request, or see the NTIS General Catalog). Only if there is no foreign sales agency should foreign orders be placed directly to NTIS. The fastest service is provided to customers who charge against their NTIS Deposit Accounts or their American Express, VISA, or MasterCard accounts because the processing of such orders is simplest for NTIS. Holders of NTIS Deposit Accounts may replenish their accounts using these credit cards. Ini- tial deposits to new Deposit Accounts may also be charged to a credit card. Otherwise, payment by check or money order must accompany each order. Discount on multiple copies When at least 20 copies but less than 100 copies of one title are ordered, NTIS automatically reduc- es the total price by 15 percent. When at least 100 copies of one title are ordered, the total price is reduced by 25 percent. This discount does not apply to all NTIS products and services. How to open a Deposit Account Use the order form on page 40 and send at least $25, or enough to cover your first order, to NTIS Deposit Accounts, 5285 Port Royal Road, Springfield, VA. 22161. Thereafter, keep at least $25 on deposit or enough to cover two months' charges. Orders will not be processed for overdrawn accounts. You may 36 deposit any amount prior to ordering. Some active customers keep several thousand dollars in their ac- counts to ensure the fastest possible service for large orders. When your account is opened, you will receive order forms to speed your shipments and simplify accounting and the recording of tax-deductible expenses. Retail sales at two locations NTIS has two retail sales locations in the Washing- ton area. In the District of Columbia, the NTIS Information Center and Bookstore is in Room 1067 in the Depart- ment of Commerce main building at 14th St. and Constitution Ave., N.W. Telephone (202) 377-0365. Several hundred best selling titles are displayed for sale and for immediate delivery without the Rush Handling surcharge. The Springfield Operations Center has a much more limited display of research reports, but any titles may be ordered for future delivery. FOR MORE INFORMATION Use the order form on page 39 to request the spe- cific supplemental information referred to on the vari- ous pages of this catalog. For information not covered by the order form, please direct your inquiry to General Information NTIS, 5285 Port Royal Road, Springfield, VA. 22161; or telephone (703) 487-4600. Basic NTIS Product is Federal research and technical information As a cornerstone of the technological publishing structure in the United States, the National Technical Information Service (NTIS) is a key participant in the development of advanced information products and services for the achievement of U.S. productivity and innovational goals in the 1980s. NTIS, an agency of the U.S. Department of Com- merce, is the central source for the public sale of U.S. Government-sponsored research, develop- ment, and engineering reports, as well as foreign (continued on page 43) 37 Don't shortcut the NTIS order numbers Order numbers are important. Please do not try to shorten the accession/report numbers when ordering documents from NTIS. If you do, the chanc- es are that you will receive the wrong document or no document. In any event, your order will be delayed. Consider: A document ordered from a 1981 issue of GRA&I, for example, carries the number PB81-239634, "Precision Measurements on Fibrous Glass Insulation." The "PB81" must be included as part of the order number because "PB81" refers to the year of announcement; the numbers follow- ing the dash are the sequential addition to the PB series for the year. It is important to remember that PB82-239634 will not be a revised edition, a superseding docu- ment, or have any special relationship with anoth- er year's number. The PB82- series is unique for 1982 and each number has a meaning. To save time, help keep costs down, and get your order filled promptly and correctly, use the whole accession/report number for ordering all the time. NO CHARGE IF NOT WHAT YOU EXPECTED If you find that the reports and micro- fiche you receive from NTIS are occa- sionally not what you expected, NTIS will refund their purchase price if the items are returned with your refund request and copies of your original order. If you are not pleased with the potential usefulness of an NTIS subscription publication, a full refund will be made for all undelivered issues immediately upon request. 38 DD T J} ° (T> CD 5> co m x> 5 o J 5 9: „ 5 CO y tB CO CD => 2 ,S => 3 CO CO 2 ° ' • < o o 3 g. 3" o w _ "^ -o o q, n, a> lint CD 3 "0 € 3 2* " — tu ai "0 _| 5- CD 3) II - o _ D DDDDDDDD O C CO "0 O 3 T3 CD 3 5'® Ms- B co — 5 I ° — ft) -i XI CO CD 2. cu =! It is the central source for fed- erally generated machine-processable data files and software and it manages the Federal Software Ex- change Center. Consequently, NTIS is one of the world's leading processors of specialty information. The NTIS information collection exceeds a million titles, some 300,000 of which contain foreign tech- nology or foreign marketing information. All are permanently available for sale, either directly from the 80,000 titles in shelf stock or from the microfiche master copies of documents less in demand. Seventy thousand new reports of completed research are added to the NTIS data base annually. In the same period NTIS supplies its customers with more than 6 million documents and microforms, shipping about 23,500 information products daily. Full summaries of current U.S. and foreign research reports and other specialized information, in hun- dreds of subject categories, are published regularly by NTIS in a wide variety of weekly newsletters, a biweekly journal, an annual index, and in various sub- scription formats for other Federal agencies. The complete texts of the reports cited are sold in paper and microform. Anyone seeking the latest technical reports or wanting to compile unique subject groups of ab- stracts may search the NTIS Bibliographic Data Base online, using the services of venders or organizations that maintain the data base for public use through contractual relationships. The whole data base in machine-readable form may be leased directly from NTIS. The more timely documents in the collection are continually grouped by NTIS into paperbound Published Searches, covering some 3,000 topical subject areas. Customers with well defined continuing interests may subscribe to a standing order microfiche ser- vice (SRIM) which enables them to automatically receive the full texts of only those documents relating to their individual requirements. NTIS sells its technical information products and services under the provisions of Title 15 of the U.S. Code (1151-7). The law established a clearinghouse for scientific, technical, and engineering information and directed NTIS to be self-supporting. NTIS, therefore, is a unique Government agency sustained only by its customers. It operates very much as a business, but in the public service. All the costs of NTIS salaries, marketing and postage, and all other usual costs of doing business, are paid from sales income; not from tax-supported congressional appropriations, certain experimental programs excepted. 43 Key Telephone Numbers To Check On Orders (703) 487-466D Subscriptions (703) 487-4630 Computer Products (703) 487-4763 New Orders for Documents & Reports (703) 487-4650 Published Searches (703) 487-4642 SRIM (703) 487-4640 Pickup Orders Downtown Information Center and Bookstore (202) 377-0365 At Springfield Operations Center (703) 487-4650 Accounting (703) 487-4770 Rush Handling (703) 487-4700 or Toll Free (800) 336-4700 General Information (703) 487-4600 Telecopier or 3M Facsimile Service (703)321-8547 Telex 89-9405 64617 (international) 44 A STATEMENT OF PURPOSE NTIS is a self-supporting information service organization stemming from a congressionally created predecessor. It channels information about technolog- ical innovations and other specialized information to business, educators, government, and the public. Its products and services are intended to increase the efficiency and effectiveness of U.S. research and development, to support U.S. foreign policy goals by stimulating the social and economic growth of devel- oping nations, and to increase the avail- ability of foreign technical information in the United States.
