The whole region here- about is interesting in its mountain topography and from its prominence in “The days of old, the days of goid, the days of 49.” The mining flavor of those days survives in the neighborhood names. ‘‘Gold Run,” "You Bet,” ‘““‘Rough and Ready,’’ ‘‘Red Dog,’ “Michigan Bar’ and “Humbug Canon’ ave all near enough for a morn- ing’s walk or a day's picnic, with the unique interest of washing out a ‘button’ of gold on your own account. The Grounds The Monte Vista grounds comprise one hundred and chivty-five acres, mostly in the wild beauty of the Sierras. Extensive orchards of apple, cherry, peach and pear trees, all in full bearing, supply unlimited quantities of fine fruit, which guests may pick at their pleasure. The Climate in this favored belt is a perpetual delight, pronounced by physicians to be without an equal in its health-giving qualities. There is no fog, none whatever, and no chill in the air at sunset. The usual summer temperature is from 70 degrees to 90 degrees. Summer showers are not infrequent. There is an abundance of shade and a great deal of water, but NO MOSQUITOES. A splendid waterfall and a beautiful fountain, both near the house, make the cooling. pleasant, soothing sound of falling water that chords so delightfully with whisper- ing pines and singing birds, and enchants one with the beauty and peace of Monte Vista. ey reas SENET Ee a a Ra The Inn and Cottages The main building is a handsome. well-built house. containing about a dozen rooms. Tt is tastefully planned and surrounded by vine-trellised porches which give it a very attractive, inviting appearance. There is a cottage of six rooms with a wide porch on all sides: three cottages of two rooms each; a log cot- tage (new) of two rcoms and several well-furnished platform tents. All the buildings are located on fine sites on rising ground facing the west and form a very picturesque group with a grand outlook of distant mountains The picture charms at once and predisposes to further acquaintance, The many streams near Monte Vista are stocked with trout and afford very good returns. Quail are rery abundant in the autumn. Grouse and tree squirrels are also plentiful. Large game, too, is often found. The walks in Monte Vista woods are especially de- lightful, there being no annoyance from mosquitoes, gnats or black flies. There is magnificent scenery within reach of a day's drive. Starting after breakfast and returning when the shadows lengthen, one may go to Grass Valley, Nevada City, Bear Valley, Spaulding Lake, Lover's Leap and many other places and feel that the day has been grandly spent. There is a small lake and swimming pool in Monte Vista grounds. Croquet, dancing platform, tennis, horseback-riding and good company are other helps to happiness. Monte Vista is 3500 feet in elevation and 157 miles from San Francisco, via the Ogden route. The morn- ing train leaving about eight o’clock (see time table in daily papers) arrives at Dutch Flat Station about 3:30 P. M., where the Monte Vista stage is waiting. Call for the special Monte Vista ticket with coupon for carriage and baggage, $7.70 for the round trip, (a very low fare). Rates for board and rooms: $12.00. for one person and $20.00 for two persons in one room. Telephone in the house. For further information address MRS. J. S. LIBBY, Dutch Flat P.
