It is a significant cause of death and the single leading underlying cause of new blindness, new kidney failure, and nontraumatic amputations. The cost to this country for medical care and premature loss of productivity is estimated at $14 billion per year, and the number of affected patients is growing. Noninsulin—dependent diabetes (also called adult-onset or type II diabetes) is the most common form of diabetes, affecting an estimated 10 million Americans. The cornerstone of treatment for this type of diabetes is not insulin or other drug therapy, but rather the adoption of certain healthy living habits. Two of the most prominent lifestyle components are diet and exercise. This bibliography was prepared in conjunction with the National Institutes of Health Consensus Development Conference on Diet and Exercise in Noninsulin-Dependent Diabetes Mellitus, December 8-10, 1986.
