Carleton Gajdusek : H¢NU 915; A STUDY IN NASCENT LITERACY Neo-Melanesian Correspondence from a Fore, New Guinea Youth Donald Rubinstein D. Carleton Gajdusek Section of Child Growth and Development and Disease Patterns In Primitive Cultures National Institute of Neurological Diseases and Stroke National Institutes of Health, Bethesda, Maryland August l970 Koiye, son of Yorasa, is a Fore youth from the village of Agakama- tasa, one of the most remote Fore villages from either mission or govern— ment stations and at the far southern limits of Fore settlement. His village is situated on the western slopes of the Lamari River valley, with hamlets lying between about 5000 and 7000 feet elevation, high above the river which is only 1800 feet above sea level. South of this village on the western side of the Lamari gorge, there is only rugged uninhabited mountainous forest, until the Pawaian population of Papaua is encountered, an expedition of several days through rough and inhospitable jungle-covered mountains. Across the river lie the 9000 to 10,000 foot ranges of the Lamari- Vailala River Divide, beyond which live the Anga (Kukukuku) peoples of very different cultural and linguistic Stock from the Fore, who are linguistically affiliated with other Highland groups to the north and west of their regions. Koiye's village was first visited by Europeans in 1956, and the name Wanitabi was recorded for it by the first government patrols. A population of 104 was then enumerated. Subsequently, to avoid ambi- guity with the related groups in the Purosa and Atigina areas, which have groups with the same name, it was called Agakamatasa (after Agaka— matamba, a small creek near the main hamlet). By 1970 its population had risen slowly and progressively to 130. At the time of the first census of Agakamatasa the area was still restricted, or so-called "uncontrolled territory." Not until 1958 was the area brought under full administrative control, warfare between villages stopped, the fighting stockades torn down, and the ritual cannibalistic consumption of the dead discouraged. Agakamatasa was the last village to tear down its fighting stockade and one of the last to finally abandon the wa'e, or large men's and ceremonial house. Koiye was probably born about the year 1950, before the first white man had been seen by his villagers, but at a time when word of the entry of white men into the New Guinea Highlands had already reached his people, and at a time when many visitors from villages closer to the government at Kainantu had already encountered Australian missionaries, gold prospec- tors and government officers during the war years. Only one half day's walk away from his village an American military plane had crashed during World War II, and the survivors had been res- Cued by the people of the neighboring village of Awarosa. During the night, however, they escaped from the shelter that had been built by the natives for them and crossed the ranges northward to Kainantu, fearing their savage rescuers. Very little steel was available to the villagers at the time of Koiye's birth, and garden work was done only with digging sticks; trees were felled for firewood using stone axes. This stone-age technology remained into the mid 1950's, while he was a young boy. He thus lived a boyhood through the years of first contact of his people with manufactured items and men from the civilized world, and his first decade was the same that saw total change of his culture from a warring, cannibalistic stone age group to a coffee growing rural society involved in a cash economy in a modern world. Agakamatasa has had, during the decade and a half of contact with civilization, one of the highest death rates from the disease kuru in the whole kuru region, and the resulting death of more women than men from kuru had brought the male to female ratio to over 2 to l in the village. In fact, a decade before Koiye's birth, most of the people of Agakamatasa had crossed the ranges to settle here from Mugaiamuti in the Purosa valley, where kuru had so decimated their population that they sought to flee from it——unfortunately without success. Across the Lamari River gorge and to the south live the Anga (Kukukuku) people of Morandugai village in the Moraei (Dunkwi) group. They speak the Simbari language of the Anga linguistic family and belong to a different language Stock from the Fore. These Anga peoples contrast culturally and linguistically, and in personality, more sharply with the Fore than do the Fore with any other group of the Eastern Highlands. Over the past 15 years a very close association has devel— oped between these two contrasting villages facing each other across the mile deep canyon on the Lamari River. Although they are but a few air miles apart, the hike from one to the other is a long arduous \climbing trip of 12 to 14 miles and requires from one half to a full day of walking. Upstream on the same side of the Lamari and only an hour's walk away are the several hamlets of the Fore village of Awarosa, with a population of 161, which is closely related to and intermarried with Agakamatasa. In 1957, D. C. Gajdusek first met Koiye, who was then a small boy of perhaps six or seven years of age, when the doctor visited the village in search of kuru victims and the geographical limits of the disease, which he was then investigating. Koiye clung closely to the group of visitors during their several days' sojourn, as did all the small boys and girls of the village, and on subsequent visits of Dr. Gajdusek to the village in 1957, 1958 and 1959, he grew to know the visiting medical investigator and his team well. Several of his older brothers and half— brothers and cousins joined the kuru research team of Dr. Gajdusek as porters or field assistants, and through them Koiye learned much about European civilization. In 1960 he finally carried for several weeks a small load of photographic or medical supplies on one of the kuru research medical patrols, as did many of the other eight to twelve year old boys. In bush camps in the rain forest, or in camps in strange villages, when the field assistants and porters clung closely to the investigator and his group for security, he began to learn about writing and written communication, books, correspondence, and’letter-writing. He also began to learn Pidgin English, or Neo—Melanesian, the lingua franca of the highlands. During these long patrols in 1962 and 1963 Koiye watched the older boys learning the alphabet, and learning to use the alphabet in attempting to write Pidgin English and their own Fore language phonetically. There was no formal schooling, but rather only the few hours of instruction in alphabet and phonetic writing, in the camp during these expeditions. Thus, before learning Pidgin well--since no one in his village really spoke it well--he was already trying to write it. In late 1963 he received, along with most boys of the village, some further instruction from Levite, a Fore native medical orderly who had had only a few years of schooling in Pidgin English and tried to transmit his experience to the village boys. Koiye had no more than a few dozen hours of writing instruction until, in 1964, he entered the Seventh Day Adventist Mission School at Keakasa village in the South Fore region, a long day's hike over the ranges from his home. There he was taught by two Eastern Highlands native missionary teachers. The two native teachers spoke a bit of English, but most teaching was then in Pidgin. He remained at the school for less than one year of formal schooling. When one after another of the young men from his and the adjacent village of Mugaiamuti, who were attending the school with him developed kuru while there, he and the few remaining pupils panicked and fled the school, as his parents had fled from Mugaiamuti over the ranges to Agakamatasa to escape, unsuccessfully, from kuru. Later, in 1965, he made one more attempt at obtaining further education, walking some 50 miles over the range to the Wonenara government patrol post, where a new native-taught Seventh Day Adventist School had been started for pupils of the Anga (Kukukuku) group which does not Suffer from kuru. After a half year there, he and the Fore boys were dismissed and sent back to their own area. These letters are six years' correspondence from Koiye to Dr. Carleton Gajdusek and to Ivan Mbagintao, a New Guinean friend and age— mate of Koiye's who has been living and attending school in the United States since 1963. We have made a careful search in our files for all letters from Koiye which have arrived at the National Institutes of Health, as well as all short notes and messages on index cards and scraps of paper, which Dr. Gajdusek received from Koiye while on ex— tensive and prolonged annual expeditions in New Guinea. In most in- stances Koiye is the sole author of the letter, although some of the correspondence is in a different hand, and is apparently the work of a friend of Koiye's in response to Koiye's dictation. In some other letters Koiye acts as scribe for another writer, and the letter is a cooperative endeavor similar to the cooperative construction of artifacts, picture-drawing, and house-building among the New Guinea Highland people. The letters are ordered chronologically. Those letters or hand— carried notes which are undated we have placed in their approximate chronological sequence. We have prepared four levels of presentation of each letter. The first and second levels are, respectively, a photograph of each letter, and a typescript transcription of the actual letters, with diacritics to indicate peculiarities of Koiye's penman— ship. The third level is a corrected Pidgin version of the letter; the fourth level is an English translation. We had line-cut negatives made from each letter, photographing all writing on both front and back of the page, and had these negatives printed as high—contrast prints, which were then compared carefully with the original letter, and re- touched in places where solid strokes in the original version appeared as broken or indefinite lines in the photographs. Except for several letters on legal—size paper, all photographs here reproduce the exact size of Koiye's own handwriting; we indicate reductions when they occur. The second level is a narrow transcription of Koiye's letter, showing misspellings, punctuation, superimposition of two or more char- acters, misconstructed characters, and attempted deletions or partial erasures. Koiye usually wrote using capital letters, at times irregu- larly interspersing characters of upper and lower case within a single word. The transcriptions, however, give a standardized version of capitalizations; the transcriptions are entirely in lower case except for personal names, geographic terms, and the names of organizations such as mission stations. The third level is a syntactically and idiomatically corrected version, showing the standardized Pidgin English which Koiye was pre- sumably attempting to produce. We have attempted to adhere closely to the form of Neo—Melanesian which appears in official government publications and in the New Guinean radio and press. In certain instances, Such as the use of the agent-marker i:_which precedes third person verbs, we have followed the suggestions of the linguist Robert A. Hall, Jr. All spelling is consistent with the Lista Bilong Stretim Speling published by the Pidgin Translation Committee of the British and Foreign Bible Society in Papua-New Guinea. We have chosen to pre— serve at this level, however, both the Anglicisms and the English orth- ography, as well as some of the peculiarities in Koiye's Pidgin, and that of the Okapa region of the Eastern Highlands which has itself changed contemporaneously with Koiye's literacy. Koiye's personal usage contains some unique features, such as his common closing line, ”Sender by Koiye." The present state of flux in Neo—Melanesian, with its rapid increase of vocabulary and continual change of idiom, and the dialectual variations in the spelling of Neo-Melanesian, which changes according to the phonetics and syllabic patterns of the local language, makes the attempt to produce an indisputably standard ver- sion from Koiye's particular idiolect, somewhat spurious. Certain phrases and Pidgin words of Standard Neo—Melanesian are not in common usage among the speakers of Koiye's region, while some English vocab- ulary, of which Koiye has gained a pidginized use, are not yet in common use throughout the Territory. The fourth level is an English translation designed to give an equivalent English meaning for Koiye's letters, as well as to represent the conciseness and economy of prose, the tendency towards rhythmic and variant restatement of phrases, and symmetrical structure in the language forms and phrases used, and the insistence and frequent forcefulness of Koiye's style of correspondence. In 1967 I asked for it, then 1967 was over, and 1968 arrived. All right, you buy it and give it to me; I will be very happy with you. If you don't buy it and give it to me, I will be very angry with you. That is all. Earlier I demanded 3 things. And you didn't buy them or give them. Now I am demanding 1 thing only. All right, last time I was not lazy about working; I worked hard, and you saw. Before, I did not fool around at work. I work hard. Mi Koiye. sent by Koiye, Kuru Research, Awande to Okapa Dr. Carleton Gajdusek, M.D., Today I am very pleased with you. All right, you listen to a short report from me. When I went to Goroka, that time I arrived at Tarabo and Kilik said, "Your boss has gone and now you arrive." He said this, so I said, "He went to his village." I said this, then he said, "All right, you come and we will eat together." He said this. So I went to eat with him. Then I came back again to Awande and Mr. Nush said, "Your father has left." Then I said, "He went to his house." I said that. He gave me some food and I ate. I went to Okapa. And I came back again at 5 o'clock. And I slept well. Then in the morning I went to Purosa, and I came back to Awande. Then I met Dr. Michael Alpers at Awande, and he and I, us both, worked. Then he left again, and I have no more work, and I am out of work. But, I don't like being out of work at the village. I want to work. But there is no work at the village. I want to work. But there is no work at Okapa so I am out of work. That is all. My short message is finished. Father, I am just talking about this. I am sorry, Father. I am Koiye. All right, I want some playing cards. I want this thing very much. You must buy them and send them to me. They will come to me, and I will get them. Earlier I told you abOut this thing.
