Santa lara Valley. The Following Charming Description of the Santa Clara Valley is From the Pen of That Able Writer, Carrie Stevens Walter. IF the map of California were folded evenly from north to south, the crease would fall very near the city of San Jose, the county seat of Santa Clara County. It is not for this reason alone, however, that the citizens of the lovely Santa Clara Valley believe that their section is the center of the earth. There are various other reasons for this belief, and for the bestowal of the name by which it is generally known—*‘‘ The Garden Valley of California.” Supposing, like One of old, you should be “taken up into amountain,”—one of that stately, serrated ridge which green-walls our county’s western boundary,—and you were to describe what lay before your intensified vision, there is no doubt that your words would be strong evidence in favor of Santa Clara Valley's claim, not only as the Garden of California, but of the world. Before you—as seen from your mountain summit of observation—lies extended a Valley some fifty milesin length by an average width of about fifteen miles, checkered throughout its entire extent with countless orchards, vineyards and farms, wherein grow in lavish luxuriance about all the semi-tropic fruits and vegetation desirable or imaginable. Throughout almost the entire extent, within hailing distance of each other, are cottages or more stately mansions, around and within which are gathered all the essentials of the ideal home. Flowers all the year round; sunshine; a genial temperature sharpened, occasionally, during the winter. months by an exhilerating touch of frostiness, that but serves as a flavoring of variety to what might possibly be, otherwise, a monotony of equability ; all the fruits of the semi-tropics in greatest perfection and abundance—these are some of the surroundings and belongings. To your left, still within the borders of Santa Clara County, lies the magiiificent nine thousand acre domain of the Leland Stanford Jr. University—the most richly endowed educational institution in the world. Clustered around a three and one half acre quadrangle— itself a veritable garden of the gods—the many building of the University, with their solid sandstone walls and their red-tiled roofs, and here and there an uprising tower, seem. like a Moorish city clipped from the fourteen*h century. Still farther to your left, across some thirty miles of flower gardens and manonlike parks— the homes of many of California’s nabobs—lics the queen city of the Pacific, San Francisco. Sweeping your gaze along the entire valley reach, from north to south, beginning at the Bay of San Francisco, an arm of which lies almost directly in front of you, your eye meets any number of towns and villages, ranging from the modest hamlet to the more pretentious town that already cherishes aspirations toward citykood. Right at the door of the University is the prettily located, and randy growing town of Palo Alto, only about three years of age; but already an incorporated town. A step farther, some three miles from the University, is Mayfield; then comes Mountain View. Across the valley to theeast are Milpitas, Alviso, Agnews, &c. Almostone with San Jose,~—its three miles of separation, spanned by one of the best electric railways in the State,—is the lovely town of Santa Clara, the mother of our valley's civilization. For here, A. D. 1777, was founded the Mission 1 ‘Santa Clara, the first European settlement of the section. Santa Clara is the seat of Santa Clara College, a university founded by the Jesuits on the site of the old Mission. The town itself contains some three or four thousand inhabitants, and as a place of residence, and for educational purposes possesses superior advantages. : Off to your right, and running along the low foot-hills of the Santa Cruz range—on one peak of which you are standing—is a section of country, which for picturesque beauty, fertility of soil, and equability of temperature, has no superior anywhere in the civilized world. In this delightful belt are the settlements of Cupertino, the famous vine section, the village of Saratoga, ~ and the more pretentious town of Los Gatos. _ Then, farther across the intervening distance, to your right, is the city of Gilroy, some thirty miles from San Jose, the trade center of one of the choice sections of California in points of beauty, fertility and temperature. Scattered all along the line of the 8. P. R. R. between San Jose and Gilroy, are many hamlets and stations that are rapidly growing into towns. : Coming back to San Jose, and looking eastward beyond the city, you see the prosperous settlements of Berryessa (noted as a fruit center), Evergreen, &c. These, as also many other locations, were twenty years ago, grain fields or cow-pastures. To-day the Flickinger canned and dried fruits, from that gentleman's 500 acre orchard and cannery at Berryessa, have an enviable reputation, not only at home, but in London, and other parts of Europe. After you have scanned the valley, and seen so much more than you can describe or enumerate, you raise your eyes to the range of mountains which is the valley’s eastern border . wall, and behold! Mt. Hamilton, crowned by that monument to science, Lick Observatory, with the largest telescope in the world, lies within your vision. The Observatory is but thirteen miles, in an air line, from the city of San Jose, but in order to preserve an easy grade, the magnificent driveway leading to it is about twenty-six in extent. Public conveyances, as well as private ‘carriages make daily trips to this noted spot. HE your gaze has been satisfied with the glorious panorama of cities and towns and ‘magnificent reaches of orchard and vineyard, and fallow fields awaiting expectantly their season ‘of planting; when you have looked at mountain walls and valley sweep until your eye is almost - ‘wearied with the changing variety of scene, then you let your glance come back to San Jose, the "Garden City ” of the Santa Clara Valley. Beautiful San Jose! which has grown from the humble Spanish pueblo of A. D. 1771, ‘through countless steps of change, to be one of the most attractive cities on the Pacific slope, ‘numbering, with its immediate suburbs, some thirty thousand or more inhabitants, and surrounded on all sides by perhaps the most highly cultivated and productive section in ‘California, one can readily perceive that its claim of beauty and supremacy is a just and © Still another name—the ‘‘ Athens of the Pacific’’—has been bestowed on account of the ‘exceptional educational facilities afforded, and the many opportunities for intellectual culture. Eighteen miles from the Stanford University—where San Jose students go and return daily—with ‘Santa Clara College, the University of the Pacific, College of Notre Dame, any number of smaller private educational institutions of merit, as well as private instructors in all branches, the State Normal School, a High School of exceptional merit, and a most excellent system of public schools—these are some of the advantages referred to. Then, almost every night in the week lectures are given, either before the University Extension Club, or some other body, often by some of the leading talent of the world. Nearly all religious denominations have congregations and church edifices; and it would seem that no reasonable aspiration for religious, educational or intellectual opportunities could not be satisfied in San Jose. : CARRIE STEVENS WALTER. $350 Per Acre—10 acres number one fruit land, Country Property. of San Jose. In order to convince our eastern friends that money invested in a Santa Clara County or- chards will give better results than can be obtained elsewhere, we give below a few state- ments of receipts, each one of which can be easily verified: L. Woodrow, in the Willows, season of 1893, sold his crop of prunes from 6 acres of land for $4,050. Henry Booksin, Sr., sold his crop of prunes, peaches, apricots and cherries from 80 acres, season of 1893, for $24,000. Geo. McLaughlin took 35 tons of prunes from 214 acres; sold for $1,500. Jacob Miller, at Berryessa, sold his cherry crop from 28; acres for $2200—more than $700 per acre. : Thomas Plummer sold the crop from his 2921, acre orchard on Plummer avenue, season of 1893, mixed fruit—prunes, apricots, pears, ete., for $5,300, or a little over $200 per acre net. F. W. Burkholder sold crop from 50 acres on San Thomas road, 6 miles west of San Jose, season of 1893, for $14,000. Dr. Geo. D. Brownlee picked four tons of peaches from 250 trees two years old, and all of it first class fruit. John N. Preston, sold the crop from a little less than five acres in 1893 for $1,000. His place is on Leigh avenue, near Campbell. Mr. Jacks, on Meridian road, in the Willows, sold the cherries on a little less than four acres for $2,300 on the trees, the buyer to harvest the crop. Jacob Miller harvested 418 tons of prunes from his 60 acre orchard, two miles west of San Jose. We sold this property to Mr. Miller in the Fall of 1892 for $38,500, and his first crop more than half paid for it. $75,000 would not buy this same orchard to-day. The following figures, clipped from the San Jose Daily Mercury of Jan. 21, 1894, give an accurate account of shipments by rail from this point for the season of 1893, which shows a healthy increase over former seasons, and also shows that while other parts of the country may have been struggling with a business de- pression of great magnitude, the products of this beloved valley of ours have put many mil- lions of dollars into the hands of the honest tillers of the soil. We realize that statistics are, as a rule, dry reading matter, but in this instance we think the reader will be in- terested enough in the subject to give the following figures their careful attention as they fully substantiate the statements made elsewhere in this book regarding the wonder- ful productiveness of the Santa Clara Valley: OVERLAND FREIGHT SHIPMENTS—YEAR OF 1893.
