In addition, the United States extends protection to foreign works by means of various international conventions, bilateral agreements, and proclamations. The industry of first importance is that of the growing of apples. The climate and soil of the Valley are particularly adapted to this purpose, and the production and marketing of this fruit has come to be a business of gigantic proportions. To- day the Pajaro Valley produces and ships out more apples than any other single district in the world. The shipments of apples and their by-products for the season of 1909 aggregated more than 4,000 carloads or 2,560,000 boxes, and the acreage and production are yearly increasing. These apples were produced from less than 12,- . 00 acres of orchards, and brought into the Valley approximately $2,000,000 of out- € money. . Next in relative importance is the berry crop. Here seems to be the original ‘home of the berry. Strawberries, blackberries, loganberries, raspberries, and other less important varieties, thrive wonderfully and return to the growers almost unbelievable profits. During one season as many as 5,000,000 pounds of strawber- ries have been shipped from this Valley. Berries are the only crop requiring irri- gation. To supply this need there are streams, lakes, and artesian water, within easy reach. ah : Apricots of exceptional quality, prunes, cherries, and other small fruits are pro- duced in commercial quantities, certain sections of the Valley being especially suit- ‘ed to their growth. r Oats, barley, alfalfa, potatoes, sugar beets, and in fact all kinds of farm pro- ~ ducts are profitably grown. As an example of the extreme fertility of the soil and its productiveness, the records of the Department of Agriculture show a record of 130 bushels of wheat to the acre in this valley. THE BEAUTIFUL PAJARO RIVER | i + Stockraising and ‘dairying constitute important industries. The Watsonville Creamery is a large institution, putting out butter of such quality that the supply tained in the Soil Survey above mentioned, an examination of which is recomm : 18 never equal to the demand for it. ig ed to all By Poultry raising, now recognized everywhere as one of the greatest money mak- ; ra ers, especially for the man of small means, is fast coming into prominence. No- ‘Where in the world are the climate and environment more conducive to the success- {ul conduct of this business than in the low foothills surrounding the Pajaro Valley. : The growth of the eucalyptus is believed to be the California industry having the greatest of all prospects for enormous development. Growing to merchantable size within a few years, suitable for a great variety of purposes, and yielding won- derful profits, this timber can be grown in only a very limited section of the United tes. This Valley is the choice spot for the purpose. Thousands of acres of the best eucalyptus land are available at very low prices, and the opportunity, by a small investment, thus to provide for a fortune in the course of a few years, dur- ~~ ing which there is nothing to do but to watch the trees grow, is one that cannot be _ over-estimated. This industry is now in its infancy, and many fail to recognize its importance. Before long the realization will come and the present opportunity will be no more. i NE TRANSPORTATION. .
