KILLIP & CO., LIVE STOCK AUCTIONEERS, 22 Montgomery Street, San Francisco. 21] 720% 0T > REMARKS. BANCROFT En LIBRARY The determination of Mrs. Skinner to retire permanently from the business of breeding fine horses affords a rare opportunity to secure at public auction some of the choicest brood mares upon the Pacific Coast. A number of these animals are gilt-edged, and must be seen to be appre- ciated, as in form as well as breeding they are number one. The older mares were selected by the late Mr. Silas Skinner, an enthusiast upon the Standard Trotter, and were bred by Gen. W. T. Withers, at the home of, the mighty Almont, Fairlawn, Lexington, Kentucky. In making his se- lections, Mr. Skinner kept in view the particular strains which, at that time, seemed likely to come into farther prominence, and a glance at the pedigrees as extended, shows his wonderful good judgment: Alexander’s Abdallah! the Clays! Mambrino Chief! what a combination! Scarce a modern trotting sire of note but contains more or less of this wonderful mingling of blood. Almont, Electioneer, George Wilkes, Harold, Nut- wood, Dictator, and in the next generation, Maud S, Sunol, Jay Eye-See, Guy Wilkes, Fanny Witherspoon, Felix and Director. How famous these names, still farther supplemented by Sable Wilkes, Axtell, Direct and Margaret S. in the succeeding one. Can it be doubted, in the face of this positive evidence, that “like begets like,” and that the proper method is to have the fountain-head pure. In these enlightened days of breeding it were folly to commence with anything less than the best with the hope to succeed. Back of these trotting strains are judicious Crosses of thoroughbred, now fully recognized as desirable to give nerve and stamina to sustain the pure trotting gait so universally imparted by the Hambletonian-Clay-Mambrino Chief blood. The Catalogue sets forth fully in detail the produce of each brood mare offered. It will be seen they have been bred to first-class stallions, such as Director, Noonday, Mountain Boy, Wildwood, etc., and are believed to be with foal. A full and candid statement is made regarding each animal, and the 4 REMARKS. | pedigrees of those not registered will be verified to the entire satisfaction of purchasers. | We confidently submit this offering of Standard Bred Stock, feeling that the public will recognize its value and pay for it a fair equivalent. | BROOD-MARES At the conclusion of sale of horses, WILDWOOD FARM will be offered, ; a description of which follows the list of stock.
