Farnam Fund TOLEDO— A DOORWAY THE -RENAISSANCE ARC HI TECT VRE OF-CENTRALAND NORTHERN- SPAIN A COLLECTION OF PHOTOGRAPHS AND MEASVRED DRAWINGS BY AVST1N WHITTLESEY NEW YORK. 1920 ARSHITECTYRAL BOSICPVBLISHING CO. PAVL WENZEL AND MAVRJCE KRAKOW THIRTYONE EAJT TWELFTH JTREET INTRODUCTION THE first intent was to publish but one volume on the Renaissance Architecture of Spain and to include examples from the whole country, but the war having interrupted the author's studies, the publishers believing the material gathered in Southern Spain worthy of a separate volume, undertook to publish some time ago, the minor Ecclesiastical, Domestic and Garden Architec ture of Southern Spain. The only excuse offered in confining the present volume to central and northern Spain and omitting all illustration of so much that is of interest in the south, is because it is intended that this book shall be a companion and continuation of the first. To one travelling through Spain for the first time, the difference in character between the north and the south is very astonishing, for the barren and bleak plateau with its extreme changes of temperature has had its effect upon the architecture and nowhere, with the exception of a narrow strip along the Mediterranean Coast, does one find the charming whitewashed picturesqueness of Andalucia. The northern cities are quite grim in their general aspect with high stone buildings frowning down upon the narrow streets. As Ior the villages, they are rarely more than a collection of huts built of rough stones or clay, which, from a few miles away, look more like a collection of huge boulders than a town. To the average student of architecture, the districts covered here will probably be the more interesting for the architecture is in general more dignified and restrained with a better execution of detail. As Anda lucia is the home of the baroque, so does one feel in such cities as Salamanca and Burgos that the plateresque style has held its sway, for at every turn the traveller finds some charming bit of detail, in smaller buildings as well as in more pretentious monuments No attempt has been made at an historical description, the book being offered solely as a collection of photographs and drawings which it is hoped will be of some practical value to the designer. The author has felt that any measured drawings of buildings would be but a repetition of those so ably done by Andrew Prentice whose book is so well known and the reader will find many of those drawings supplemented with photographs here. It was thought well, however, to include some drawings of simple iron work as well as some typical examples of furniture. List of Plates PLATE NO. Frontispiece, Toledo, A Doorway. 1 .
