University, Qalleries, Oxford, 1895 Loan Exhibition ot the Work of William Turner Of Oxford (1/89-1862) /"^^.Q UNDER REVISION On sale at the Galleries, price threepence C>jcfovb HORACE HART, PRINTER TO THE UNIVERSITY \ 1 rlLLIAM TURNER— generally called Turner of Oxford to distinguish him from his more famous contemporary J. M. W. Turner— was born on November 12, 1789, at Black- bourton (near Bampton) in Oxfordshire, and on the death of his parents was brought up by an uncle who then lived at Burford, and who, in 1804, purchased the estate and manor- house of Shipton-on-Cherwell (about six miles to the north of Oxford). He became a pupil of John Varley (177871842) in London, and in 1809 was elected a mernber of the Old Water Colour Society, to the annual exhibitions of which he contributed works for upwards of fifty years (1808-1862), occasionally also exhibiting at the Royal Academy and the British Institution. He settled in Oxford, where he gave lessons in drawing. At the time of his marriage (with Elizabeth Ilott at Shipton in 1824) he is described as of St. Clement's parish, but he after wards occupied for many years a house in St. John's Street. His summer sketching tours can to some extent be traced by his sketches, though, as these are seldom dated, it is difficult to place them in chronological order. He seems to have gone to Cornwall in 1836, to North Wales in 1840, to the Western Highlands in 1844 or 1845, and to West Sussex in 1846. His Jove of the New Forest scenery probably dated from his early years, when he lived for some time with a cousin at Burley Lodge. Other places visited by him were Derbyshire (early in Hfe), the Medway district (1835), the English Lakes, North umberland, and Devonshire. But Oxford and its immediate neighbourhood supplied, as was natural, a large proportion — in the present Exhibition nearly one quarter— of his subjects. Next to Oxford itself his most familiar sketching-ground was WILLIAM TURNER. perhaps Shipton-on-Cherwell, the scenery of which was asso ciated with the most impressionable years of his life. A some what bald architectural sketch of the church there, as rebuilt in 1832, confirms the tradition that he supplied the design for its restoration. He died on August 7, 1862, and his grave lies just to the right of the portion of Shipton churchyard which is shown in Dr. Yule's drawing (No. 125), William Turner lived an uneventful life, and passed away almost unnoticed. His work during his lifetime was not widely known, and some of his letters show that he felt this neglect and was conscious of a sense of failure. But he had a few warmly attached friends and admirers, who believed firmly that his reputation would grow. Ruskin, writing in 1843, mentions the quiet and simple earnestness and tender feeUng of his mountain drawing, and indignantly protests against the way in which 'this patient and unassuming master' was treated by the ¦ hanging Committee of the Old Water Colour Society. ' Except the works of Hunt, Prout, Cox, Fielding and Finch, there are generally none in the room which deserve so honourable a place as those of William Turner' {Modem Painters, i. 303). His oil- paintings are not numerous, and with one or two striking excep tions are unimportant. The present is the first attempt which has been made to bring together any considerable collection of his drawings, and the Curators of the University Galleries desire to express their gratitude for the readiness writh which owners have been willing to despoil their walls in order to do honour to William Turner's memory. It is hoped that the Exhibi tion will remain open till June 29. Note.— lhe measurements are given in inches ; height first, and then width. CATALOGUE. Oie (painfin00. 1. Ifaey Mill (loixisj).
