BROUGHTON CASTLE, from a Water-Color Sketch by Mr. J Johnson. CO 784 THE BUILDING NEWS. May iyi886. THE ANGLE PORCH OF THE DINING ROOM, BROUGHTON CASTLE, OXON. THE ANGLE PORCH OF THE DINING- ROOM, BROUGHTON CASTLE, OXON. ^T^HIS illustration is from a photograph JL taken by Mr. John L. Robinson, A.R.H.A.. architect, of Dublin. It represents the very charming Angle Porch in the dining-room of Broughton Castle, in Oxfordshire, near Ban- bur;-. The work is clearly of Elizabethan date, and its detail is of the most exquisitely delicate character, finely carved and moulded. The ornamental cresting seems somewhat out of scale with the porch, but accords more in pro portion with the contemporary ceiling, this wing of the house being built in 1599. The whole apartment is an excellent piece of work in good preservation, and is thoroughly well cared for. On the porch runs the motto, '¦ Quod olim f uit meminisse minime juvat." The struc ture, like the woodwork of the room, is painted white, with the appropriate heraldic bearings illuminated in colour. We illustrated the Castle,. with plans, views, and details, in the Building- News for August 11, 1885. The Venerable Lord. Say and Sele resides in this unique mansion. 5 THE BUILDER, AUGUST 15, 1885.
