PREFACE LlAVING, while engaged in gathering materials for a genealogy of the Bergen family, procured much information relating to others of the early settlers of Long Island, at the request of some members of the Van Brunt family, I have been induced to put in shape and prepare for publication a genealogy of said family. There are gaps in the work, which from the lack of information and time I am unable to fill, branches of the family having removed and become scattered over the middle and western states of this Union, consequently difficult of access. It is to be hoped that this effort of mine will induce some one or more of the members of the family to take an interest in the matter, and make more full and complete what I have begun. As time progresses, old papers and records by accidental and other causes are destroyed and lost — knowledge which our ancestors possessed passes away; and this will continue to be the case in the future, unless the present generation make efforts to prevent it by gathering up and recording this knowledge, and by multiplying their records for the information and benefit of posterity. The contents of these pages are VI PREFACE. derived from family and church records, old papers, tomb-stones, public documents, and the early history of the country. They are intended to be accurate and reliable; but in a work of this kind errors are apt to creep in, and no doubt have crept in, in spite of all efforts to prevent it. Their imperfection is there fore admitted, and forgiveness and pardon asked for all unintentional errors and omissions. To the members of the family and others who have kindly allowed the examination of their records and papers, and afforded me the information they could gather or possessed, I would return my sincere thanks. As a general thing the genealogy of the family is in tended to be carried out to the year 1862, to which date researches were made. T. G. Bbkgbn. Bay Ridge, Kings Co., N. Y., September 1, 1867. Rutgers JOESTEN van BEUNT, or Rutger the son of Joost or George, the common ancestor of the Van Brunt family in this country, emigrated from the Nether lands in 1653, and was among the first settlers in New Utrecht, on Long Island in the present state of New York, in 1657. From whence the name is derived is involved in uncertainty, there being no place in the Netherlands named Brunt, the nearest approach being " Bruntinge, a hamlet in the province of Drenthe, three- fourths of an hour's travel south of Westerbork, contain ing seven houses and fifty inhabitants." The Honorable H. C. Murphy, while U. S. Minister at the Hague, on diligent inquiry and examination of the directories of the principal cities, failed to find a single individual of the name in the country. He, however, obtained a copy of an arithmetic published by J. Brunt, of which five editions had been issued, the title of the third being " continua tion of the rudiments of arithmetic, composed in ques tions and answers for the use of schools, by Jan Brunt, in his lifetime schoolmaster at Leyden, by M. & S. Bevel, master in the liberal arts, and doctor in philosophy, printed in 1824 at Leyden." From Jan Brunt not having the prefix of Van to his name, it may be inferred that Brunt is a proper surname, and not derived from the place from which Rutger Joesten emigrated. Rutger Joesten was an agriculturist, holding large tracts of land, and one of the most influential citizens of the newly begun village of New Utrecht where he con tinued to reside until his death which occurred prior to 2 GENEALOGY OF THE 1713, the exact date not having been ascertained. He died intestate leaving his grandson Nicholas ^ his heir-at-law. Dec. 19th, 1721, letters of administration were granted by Governor Burnet on his personal estate, to Joost,' his son, Nicholas' being dead and Cornelius' having renounced his riglit. By a deed dated Aug. 8th, 1717, recorded in the office of the register of Kings county iu liber D, page 153, of Conveyances, it appears that at this date a division was made of Rutger Jobstbn's real estate. Ou the settle ment of the village of New Utrecht, Rutger Joesten was allotted a double lot lying on the east side of laud of Thomas Jansen, and ou the west side of Jan Gerritse, being in breadth 48 rods, and in length 600 rods, contain ing 48 morgen (about 100 acres) ; also a double house or building lot in the village, lying east of the lot of Nica- sius de Sille, and west of Cornells Beeckman, in breadth 20 rods, in length 30 rods, on which he erected his dwell ing house, one of the first three built in the village. Afterwards on the further division of the common lands of the town he obtained several other large plots, araong which were two lots known as numbers 11 and 12, at the Yellow Hook, now Bay Ridge, described as lying by the "fontein," at present the homestead farms held by Rulif and Daniel Van Brunt, his descendants, and he also pur chased several tracts.* *Among the conveyances to Eutgert Joesten are found the following : Willem Willemse Van Engen to Rutger Joesten, dated May 9th, 1661 ; conveys a lot in New tJtrecht with house, barn and valey, being lot No. 16, bounded S,. by Gerrit de Mof, and on tlie W. by the purchaser, for the sum of 650 guilders in good strong wampnm. '' *= " VAN BRUNT FAMILT. 3 On the 6th of February, 1660, the director general Petrus Stuy vesant with the fiscael (attorney general) Nica- sius de Sille, visited the village of New Utrecht, on which occasion he admonished the residents each to erect a suit able dwelling, to keep a man-servant able to bear arms, and also to inclose the village with good heavy palisades. On this occasion the inhabitants had the Prince's fiag (given to the town by the fiscael) hoisted on a high pole in the centre of the village and unfurled to the breeze, and Rutger Joesten assisted by his neighbors prepared a public entertainment or dinner in as good a style as the place could afford, at which the director general and fiscael were guests. During the troubles in 1663 and the begin ning of 1664, and prior to the English conquest of New Netherlands, when the towns of Hempstead, Jamaica, Newtown, Oysterbay and Gravesend (whose settlers were mostly English), entered into a " combination," as they termed it, to manage their own affairs, but in reality to throw off the Dutch yoke and join the English, and employed Capt. John Scott (ahold and unprincipled adven turer who had been banished by the Parliament from Eng land for his misdeeds), to manage their aff'airs and fight their battles — the valiant captain at the head of his 150 followers, after marching to Brooklyn ferry, Flatbush and other localities, and frightening the peaceable farmers with his antics and warlike display, marched into the quiet village of New Utrecht. There, among other singular feats he dismounted the small cannon in the block-house erected for defense against the Indians, andthen remounted it in another port-hole which he called the King's port and fired a salute. At the house of Rutger Joesten, one of his valiant band, an Englishman from Hempstead plains, a smith by trade, came along making considerable noise and uproar, inquiring for Matthys Pickstaert, threatening to run Tryntie Claes, Rutger Jobsten's wife, through with a sword which he held in his hand, and pointed three different times at her breast, calling out, "Where is the man ? so that eventually all the Englishmen came into her house and stilled the fury, and relieved her of the dread and peril in which she was placed. On the establishment of a court of schepens (justices of the peace) in the town of New Utrecht on the 22d of Dec, 1661, Jan Tomasse (Van Dyck), Rutgert Joesten, and Jacob Hellekers (Swart) were appointed to the office, which position Rutgert Joesten held in 1665, and probably during 4 GENEALOGY OF THE the intermediate years. In 1678, 1679, 1680, and 1685 he was one of the opzienders (overseers), the principal magis trates of the place, an office established in 1665, after the conquest of the New Netherlands by the English. It is probable he held this office for a much longer period, the records being very meagre and imperfect. In 1675, Rutger Joesten was assessed for 1 poll, 5 horses, 4 cows, 13 sheep, and 1 hog, valued at .£144 10s., and 72 mor gen of land and valley valued at £144. In 1683 he was assessed 2 polls, 200 acres of land, 8 horses and 24 cows. In 1693 he was assessed for 2 slaves, 100 acres of land, 4 horses, 12 cattle, 5 house plots, 1 house, 1 barn, 1 mill and 1 brewery. On a census of 1698 he is entered, 1 man, 1 woman and 5 slaves. He married 1st in 1657, Tryntje Claes or Claesen, widow of Stoffel Harmenson, cloth shearer, who was killed by the Indians in the attack of 1655, leaving surviving a son at the time twelve years old.* Tryntje was born about 1618, and living as late as 1688, in which year there is an entry on the church books of her paying 12 guilders to the church fund. He married 2d Gretian who was proba bly living in 1721, Rutoer Joestbn's estate being allowed at that time two women's places in the church. Issue, all undoubtedly by first wife : Nicholas' Rutgersz. CORNELISI liuTGERSZ. .Joosti Rutgersz. The following is a fac simile of his signature : * The following is a copy of the minutes of the orphan's court of New Amsterdam, which throws light on this subject : " Whereas Tryntje Clasen, wid. of the deceased Stoffel Har mensen, cloth shearer, killed in the year 1655 in the attack of the Indians, intends to enter again the married state with Rut. Joesten van Brant, bachelor,' and a little stepson about 12 years old is left by the above named Tryntje Claesen and Stoft'el Harmensen, and It appears by the will of said Stoffel Harmensen dated 10th Jnly, 1649, executed at Amsterdam before the notary Indrieq van der Vin and certain witnesses, and exhibited to the worshipful Orphan Masters of this city that the said little boy should receive the just half of his father's goods and effects; and it is accordingly -necessary that examina tion and proof be made of the said child's just share by impartial persons, either by perti nent inventory or estimate of the estate left by said Stoft'el Harmensen ; Therefore have the worshiplul Orphan Masters requested and eonimissioned as their worships hereby do, Messrs. Johannis Neflus, and Jaques Cortelyou as guardians and tutors over the said minor child, after examination of tho estate, means and eft'ects which have been left, to agree with the said Tryntje Clasen about the child's just share, and then to make the same known here at the orphan chamber, and to secure the same by mortgage on the lands or other real estate, so that the aforesaid child may obtain his just paternal share. VAN BRUNT FAMILY. 19 loan officer of the county, and in 1791 one of the com missioners to rebuild the court house in the town of Flatbush. The Lombardy poplar being introduced into the coun try about this period. Col. Van Brunt propagated them in nurseries, and planted more than a mile of the frontage of his farm on the road leading from New Utrecht to Gravesend, and also both sides of the lane leading to his dwelling house, with the young trees, placing them 12 feet apart, intending when of sufficient size to use them as a substitute for fence posts. The experiment on being tried, when the trees had arrived at a sufficient size after his death, proved a failure, the sap oozing out of the holes cut in the sides of the trees to admit the insertion of the rails, together with the dampness, caused the inserted end of the rails in a short time to decay, and the rail to drop or be easily displaced by cattle. These steeple-shaped trees which some years ago gave this road a picturesque appearance, have about all disappeared. At the time when these trees were young, the appren tices of Col. James Cropsey, a master carpenter, com monly known as Boss Cropsey, a resident of the locality in New Utrecht known as Unionville, on returning at night from a ball in the village of Gravesend, out of mischief broke down several of the young poplars. Col. Van Brunt on discovering the damage next day, knowing of the ball and ascertaining who were present, soon divined who had done the mischief. Calling upon Boss Cropsey, he in formed him of his suspicions ; on which the Boss took a singular method to ferret out the culprits. He went into the shop where his apprentices were at work, and pro ceeded to make a bat iu their presence, they having spied the colonel, looking upon his actions with distrust. On completing the bat, he walked up to one of the most timid, and, without saying a word, commenced whaling him on his bottom ; after two or three blows the frightened ap prentice roared out, " Oh, stop Bossy, stop Bossy, and I will tell you all about it ! " The Boss ceased^his blows, aud the boy made a full confession, in which the others joined. The offenders having been brought before the colonel, the punishment he meted out to them was to come the next day and pull flax all day, a laborious job. The boys after having performed their penance, said they did not so much mind pulling the flax, as the being compelled at noon by the colonel to come into the house and dine with 20 GENEALOGY OF THE the family, being at the time overwhelmed with shame for their conduct. Cultivated, owned and resided on a large farm on the south side of the village of New Utrecht, which he in herited from his father, extending from the main street in said village to the bay, now subdivided into the farms of Jeremiah E. and Englebert Lott, that of the heirs of Rutgert A. Van Brunt, the Bath property, that of Wm. G. Verity and of heirs of F. Keymer, and the Benson ave nue lots. From 1763, to the end of his life, he was gene rally a member of the consistory of the Reformed Dutch church of the town. In 1775, at the commencement of the revolution, in which the United States achieved her independence, Adrian Van Brunt was captain of the militia of the town, favoring the separation from Great Britain. It was on the farms of Adrian Van Brunt and that of Isaac Cortelyou, the British, on the morning of the 22d of Au gust, 1776, landed 15,000 men with 40 pieces of cannon, in command of Lord Howe, under cover of the guns of a portion of their fleet, intended to put down the rebellion in the state and colonies, which effiart, however, proved to be a signal failure. After the battle of Long Island and the occupation of the island and the city of New York by the British, Adrian with his neighbors, were compelled either to take the oath of allegiance to the king, to leave the country, or suff'er the pains and penalties of a refusal. Not being prepared to emigrate, aud unwilling to run the risk of suffering and starvation, he and nearly all the farmers of Kings Co., in November, 1776, took the oath and protection, and remained under the British govern ment until the end of the war. On the 13th of June, 1778, Wm. Marrener with Lieut. John Schenck and twenty-eight VAN BRUNT FAMILY. 21 militia-men from Middletown point, N. J., landed from two boats on New Utrecht beach, and after having called upon their friends, with a portion of their force marched to Flatbush with the intention of making prisoners of Mayor Matthews of N. Y., Miles Sherbrook, Major Mon- criffe and Theophylaet Bache. The attempt on the two former failed on account of their absence, but succeeded with the others, aud in addition, Capt. Forrest was cap tured, who were all safely carried oft" from their beds, marched to the beach, and taken to New Jersey. The British authorities rightly supposed that it was impossible for Marrener's party to have marched to Flatbush in the evening without having been seen by some of the inhabit ants. Those who knew of or had seen the party and failed to give the alarm, by law, were guilty of treason. Col. Rutgert Van Brunt, of Gravesend, and his brother Adrian, and Rem Van Pelt and his brother Aert, of New Utrecht, were arrested on the 16th of June, on suspicion, and confined separately in the provost jail in New York. The colonel who had money, managed to bribe the sergeant who had charge so as to obtain a midnight interview with his fellow prisoners, at which it was arranged to deny all knowledge of the affair. When examined separately, they all agreed in their story, and no proof appearing against them, they were discharged. During the war, Adrian appears to have been the leading man in the town, his name appearing at the head of addresses, commit tees, etc. Issue : Rutgert A,s b. Aug. 10, 1761. Maria, b. March 3, 1764.
