Owing to the destruction of the early records of the town of Newport, it has been impossible to obtain a full account of the descendants of EDWARD THURSTON. The undersigned has collected, from public and private rec ords, the contents of this pamphlet, which it is believed will be interesting to the descendants now living, and enable them to trace their families back to the first settler of the name in Rhode Island. The name of THURSTON is said to be derived from the Saxon, Danish, and Runic troest, meaning, trusty or faithful. " In some cases, perhaps, from the Teutonic name Turstin, which is found in Domesday as the designation of persons of both Norman and Saxon. One Turstanus is there described as ' machinator,' probably a military engineer." " Ton, a common bermination for names of places, and consequently for those of persons." Lower's patronymica. " Thurston and others from the god Thor, son of Odin." Ferguson. Of the family in. England the foUowing is found, viz. : THURSTAN, a parish in Suffolk Co. THURSTONLAND, a town in York Co. THURSTON, of Thetford, Norfolk Co., and his son Ralph, ivere mint-masters at the time of the Conquest, and had the same irms as borne at the present day by their descendants. THURSTAN, the Abbot of Glastonbury, retired in 1084 to Jaen, Normandy, from whence he came. He was afterwards •estored, in the time of William Rufus. THURSTAN was elected the 28th Archbishop of York in 115. In 1132 he founded Fountain's Abbey. Upon its ruins till remains his device, " A thrush upon a tun." He is described but yet of notable learning," and „ . „„ -l: -; subordinate to the Archbishop of Canterbury. He retired to the monastery of Pontefract, where le died February 5, 1139. DANIEL THURSTON had a grant of land in Newbury in 1638. He married Anna Lightfoot, August 29, 1648, and died without issue, February 16, 1666. DANIEL THURSTON, Je., a nephew of Daniel, Sen., mar ried Anne Pell, October 20, 1655. They had seven sons and four daughters. Daniel Thurston died February 19, 1693, leaving four sons surviving, viz. : Daniel, born Dec. 18, 1661. Joseph, " Sept. 14, 1667. James, " Sept. 24, 1670. Stephen, " Feb. 5, 1674. [Cofiin's Newbury.] There is a tradition that there were three or four of the name who came together and landed at Newbury, Mass., in 1638. Of these, the two Daniels settled in Newbury. Farmer mentions a John Thurston, of Newbury, in 1641, who may have been of the number. It is possible that Edward Thurston, of Newport, R. I., may have been one. Reg.J JOHN THURSTON, aged 36, and his wife Margaret, aged 32, were passengers for New England in the " Mary Anne," May 10, 1637. Two other sons were born in New Eng land, viz. : 1 Thomas, baptized in Wrentham, Eng., August 4, 163d, married Sarah Thaxter, Dec. 13, 1655, and had Thomas, born 1659 ; John, born 1657 ; and Nathaniel, born 1661. 2 John, baptized in Wrentham, Eng., Sept. 13, 1635. Freeman, May 27, 1663. 3 Joseph, baptized in Dedham, Sept. 13, 1640. 4 Benjamin, born in Dedham, July 8, 1640. Married Eliza Walker, and died Nov. 10, 1678. John Thurston had a grant of land in Dedham, Feb. 16, 1643. His family finally settled in the adjoining towns of Wrentham and Medfield. Benjamin Thurston and his wife Eliza were among the found ers of the Old South Church, in Boston, May 16, 1669. Tliomas Thurston, son of Thomas and Mehitable, was born in Wrentham, Nov. 2, 1689. David Thurston, son of Thomas and Esther, was born in Wrentham, Nov. 20, 1693. Daniel Thurston, son of Thomas and Esther, was born in Wrentham, Sept. 25, 1695. Thomas Thurston married Mehitable Mayo, in Wrentham, July 23, 1695. [N. E. Hist, and Gen. Reg.] THOMAS THURSTON, a Quaker, aged 34, was a passenger in the " Speedwell," from London, May 30, 1656, and landed at Boston, Aug., 27, 1656. He, with three other passengers, were, after being examined, committed to prison, " there to remain until the return of the ship that brought them," and then to be carried back to England, " lest the purity of the religion professed in the churches of New England should be defiled with error." RICHARD THURSTON, commander of the " John Adven ture," of New England, by order of the Council of State, had license to go to Maryland with his ship, June 9, 1651. By another order of June 11, a petition from him was referred to the Com mittee of the Admiralty. [State papers, Colonial series.] THURSTONS OF RHODE ISLAND. 1 EDWARD THURSTON was the first of the name in the Colony of Rhode Island, and his marriage to Elizabeth, the daughter of Adam Mott, in June, 1647, is the third on the record of the " Society of Friends," at Newport. To this society we are indebted for a complete record of his family and of those of his descendants " who remained faithful." EDWARD THURSTON is mentioned in the colonial rec ords as a freeman in 1655; as Commissioner, Assistant, and Deputy from Newport for many years from 1663 to 1690. On the 26th August, 1686, he, with others, signed an address from the Quakers of Rhode Island to the King. He died March 1, 1707, aged 90 years. His wife, Elizabeth, died September 2, 1694, aged 67 years. His will was made Jan uary 11, 1704, and proved March 12, 1707. In it he names his grandson, Edward, the son of his son Edward; ^s four surviving sons, Jonathan, Daniel, Samuel, and Thomas ; his granddaughter, Elizabeth, the daughter of Jonathan ; his p^^o.nriJnw Wocsfori Clarkc aud Ebenezer Slocum, and two ed Slocum. DESCENDANTS OF EDWARD THURSTON, ELDEST SON OF EDAVARD. 4 EDWARD THURSTON, of Newport (Edward), was a free man May 6, 1679, and died December 7, 1690, aged 38 years. From the will of his daughter, Abigail Dyer, made in Provi dence May 5, 1753,' and other writings in possession of E. W. Seabury, Esq., New Bedford, Mass., we learn that her paternal grandfather came from England and married Eliza beth Mott. He was pastor of the 2d Baptist Church in Newport, and was the only clergyman remaining there in 1780. He held services in Trinity Church, until his own church could be repaired.
